Funny, Tyrese promised ROTF would be darker and more ominous. I suppose it was: if you leave out Leo, Sam's parents, and humping dogs among other things.

No, I think Shia means that in order to allocate more money for the robots, the lighting budget had to be cut for the actual live action scenes, thus it's an even "darker" film

I really hope this is true! The second was too light and humorous to be taken seriously by me and others. I will always see ROTF as an "experiment" by the producers, to see just what they could do with the live-action franchise. I'd like them to go back to having less robots, with enough screen time to make them feel welcome. Sideways, the extra Constructicons, Sideswipe, Jolt and Arcee all felt like they were added as extras. Plus they brought back a bunch of the dead 'Cons rather than replacing them with new arrivals, so that made me upset. War means consequences. If you can just revive everyone what's the point of killing your opponents?

It probably will be darker. The decepticons have lost ground and need to make a real comeback as their numbers are dwindling and they are enslaving protoborn after protoborn.

So darker is extremely likely, especially as sam should potentially start losing his humanity to what's inside himself. Which would explain the heavy focus of his ties to his humanity like mikaela, and what she would do to help save him. They have many angles to tap and go, but for all intents and purposes, it's nowhere but darker as this war reaches a head on our world, and abroad. They also need to deal with the soundwave espionage still, and the mars decepticon HQ. Freeing the slaves, as jetfire points out about the choice, and more.

And who knows what the fallen truly wanted the power for, as we don't know why a cube that just seemingly expels power was left on a desolate world. Was it there to keep a beast satiated? Creating bots solely to repower itself to keep this beast satiated? What's going to happen as cybertron starts to finally die out? What factions are still left there? And more. All we know is his promises of grandeur he told megatron to entice him to go rogue with the cybertronian militia.

The next movie will be a huge amount of death and despair as we finally start seeing these bots personified to feel the impact of their sacrifices or deaths.
Also no unauthorized politician, means autobots can actually chillax and be themselves without worry. Since that guy was only authed to see prime. Which conveniently denied us any downtime interactions and personifications. The twins at least get a lot for now, which opens the door next movie for the others to be personified with the twins as perspective. Like how BB was portrayed in comparison.

I think if anything, the first one should have been the "experiment".

    I'd rather see a re-edit of ROTF.

Yeah, but sequels usually do this. They try to expand from the first one to see where they can go, and it winds up crappy or in my case, disappointing. They learn from their mistakes in the second, and usually make up for it in the third.

They should have learned from the first's mistakes, but yeah.

I think it was pretty grimey already, too much humour with Prime splitting guys faces in half, tear the Fallen' face, punching through his chest and stuff.

Hopefully in the next movie the parents and especially can Leo can head to space and died from a lack of oxygen and those stupid dogs too.

TF2 was quite dark bec. most of the Decepticons lost their heads. If the Decepticons also lose their balls, it would be darker.

    Yay, darkness! 8D

TF2 was pretty dark though, and gory robot-wise.
