WTF was up with the subpar animation in this episode?

I thought Akane had Rikka killed for rejecting her in the previous episode, wiped Yuta's memory and took Rikka's place so she could keep an eye on him.
Nice dream episode, but I would have liked it to have taken up two episodes.
I think I would like to see more meaningful interaction between Akane and the others.
Nice to see the Dinobots consider Anti as a human being. He seems to be going through a bit of an identity crisis atm.

I kind of felt like Team Gridman was a bit assholey or cold at least to Akane.
She was clearly reaching out to them and she took their rejection pretty hard.
Hope they make up for that in the next episode.
But I bet Mr K Alexis Shelby isn't going to let that happen without a fight.

 

Anyone catch any new references this episode? I'm pretty sure that robot toy Akane was playing with in the first scene was from something, but I couldn't place it.

Did anyone else here know that "maniacal laughter" is a real thing? I didn't until Powered Zenon showed up. I started cackling and didn't stop for a good two minutes until I was hyperventilating, beet red, and covered in sweat. Gods I haven't laughed like that in ages! I love this show! If the Dyna Dragon (my favorite toy as a kid) ever shows up, this show may actually kill me. XD

 

I love Powered Zenon. And what I love even more is that Trigger sticks to their guns and makes robots look like toys. Zenon had no elbows  

I wouldn’t say subpar, it was simplistic and stylized. I noticed it too but the episodes had unnecessarily detailed shots in other scenes which made me think they played with the animation in this episode on purpose.

I personally wonder what all the names mean they were dropping in this episode. I recognized Ultraman-stuff like Red King and Gomora but nothing else. Maybe they could only use these names since its Tsuburaya and the others are simply based on other things?

 

The animation for a lot of the dream parts were really bad.

I'm sure thinking back, our dreams would probably looked funny when inspected.

I'm positive that the shot where Yuta wakes up staring at the ceiling in Akane's house was a callback to a scene in Evangelion where he wakes up in the hospital.

 

The thought crossed my mind. Because it was mostly when they were in he dream.

So with only three more episodes it's starting to look less like there's some far-reaching reason they are all in this world and it is getting more likely they are living in a virtual sim Akane created because she is lonely.
Makes me wonder.
The Dinobots don't seem like they are created by Akane.
Neither are Gridman and Alexis.
Perhaps they are all other players?
Maybe some of them might even be the real Yuta, Rikka and Utsumi?
Alexis could be the real Utsumi for sure  
Unless Akane only wrote him with that intrest in Kaiju because SHE was the one who wanted someone to bond with over them.

 

Also if Yuta, Rikka and Utsumi are Akane's creations she created independently thinking AI.
No wonder Alexis wants to control her.

 

Just gonna leave this here let you imagine what they'd look like all combined.

And then Akane completely lost her marbles and made it clear that all bets are off when it comes to bleakness and violence in this anime.
Next two episodes are gonna be either epic or epic fails.
I hope the former.
Oh yeah, And the music was amazing.
Trigger really needs to give the person responsible for their music everything they want in order to keep them on board.

EDIT: Holy sweet mother of shit. What an episode. First Gridknight, then that ending, and Sagisu pulled out his A game for this one. I don’t know how I feel about this quite yet.

It's interesting that they used the Grid-Knight concept since that was an originally going to be slated for a sequel to OG Gridman.

 

This looks so cool. Is it dubbed in english? I'm already so excited by these screenshots that I want them to make a Transformers cartoon already   That's exactly the look that I want.
