According to you, is there such a thing as a "serious" collector in this hobby? If so, what defines one for you?

    Just curious...

Not sure. Off the bat, a "serious" collector is the one that goes after high priced collectibles, aka the masterpiece figures.

A serious collector can also get G1 reissues or hunt the originals. I consider myself a serious collector and have been tracking down every animated figure in the past four years.

However, a "serious" collector, in my opinion, is the one that knows exactly what he\she wants and gets it there and then. There's no room for random stuff or impulse buying in a serious collector's shelves.

    Just saying.

To me, a "serious collector" is one who actively follows the line, who keeps up with what has been released, what's coming out, and is somewhat knowledgeable about the hobby in general. Basically separates this type of person from one who is only aware of what's out now or recently, only has a handful or so of figures and doesn't actively look for anything new.

A serious collector who at least tries to be a completist of 2 or more lines. a serious fan is someone who knows a shitload (and i mean lots and lots and lots) of random facts about the fiction and figures by either owning a lot of them, or by reading TFWIKI non-stop (i'm the latter :p )

Serious collectors usually have one or more of the following traits:

    - An in-depth knowledge of Transformers that is greater than the average fan

    - Dedicates large amounts of time to organising their collections and acquiring new items

    - Be willing to spend large amounts of money on single items

    - Will chase rare variants of common toys

    - Collects MISB or AFA items

Yep, I never see myself spending 2,000+ for MISB/AFA graded Transformers. However, the people that do, my hat is off to you fellas!

    Your collections look BEAUTIFUL!!!

I agree! As for me, I'm dreaming of having a complete AFA G1 Mini-bot collection as well as some of the large pre-rub ones like Optimus, Soundwave, all the cassettes and Megatron. :)

I would consider anyone who collects Lucky Draws to be a serious collector, or at least more intense than some. From what I've heard it takes a fairly deep level of connection, luck, and money in order to acquire those pieces. Cheers to those who do also, I'm certainly jealous.

A serious collector has a goal or theme that guides every acquisition and addition to his collection and wastes no time, effort or resources on items outside of the above.

I consider myself a bit of both. I have a very serious disposition towards collecting Seekers, and spend quite a bit of time and money chasing down exclusives, mild repaints, expensive, and just plain hard to find figures.

Conversely, and sometimes to the detriment of my Seeker collection, I casually collect other toy lines, and TF series. I have a descent "Classics" collection, most of Animated minus a few repaints, and quite a bit of G1. But I don't pursue them with the same enthusiasm that I do with the Seekers. All of the other lines I collect also have their fair share of exclusives and "Rare" figures too, and I have spent quite a bit of time hunting down parts to complete G1 figures.

But when there's a new Seeker announced, I almost always drop everything else I'm hunting to make sure I can get my grubby little hands on it.

To me, a serious collector means someone who appreciates Transformers, knows the characters, and knows what he wants and what he doesn't want. This doesn't necessarily mean buying the expensive items. It means buying the items that you think belong in your collection. not your toybox where the body parts will be lost forever. One of my actual pet peeves is when a non-serious collector buys a rare figure, not knowig what they are purchasing, mainly when I know they won't appreciate it as much as a serious collector would.

It's all a matter of perspective. Someone who just casually watches the movies/shows or reads the comics may consider someone else who collects toys of the entire cast "serious." The cast-collector in turn may consider someone who collects the entire line "serious," who in turn may consider someone who collects all the variants "serious," who in turn... etc. etc.

I agree with this definition. I feel like I'm a serious collector.
