It would appear that Hasbro have gotten progressively more creative in retaining old names that they no longer able to legally use without attaching some prefix to. Any ideas for other names that have been lost or we've only seen as Autobot "NAME"?

Something more interesting added to Ratchet's name would be a nice change. Something as simple as Medical Officer Ratchet would work.

Adding a prefix to a name doesn't work for one's they've lost, just for names that are considered common words on their own. Kup, while not exactly common, still probably falls into the same group as Jazz and Ratchet. Plus, I imagine it would look a little odd to just have Kup on the front of the packaging, lol.

Actual lost names aren't helped by this. Prefixes and funny spellings only help words that would otherwise be too common-use to trademark or legally defend. Hasbro couldn't sell a toy named Left For Dead Until We Need You Again Skyfire, for instance, because Mattel has registered the Skyfire name. (about a week earlier than Hasbro attempted to when using it in RiD. Oops.)

Not busting balls, but Kup worked just fine back in '86.

Then again, G1 Kup only had half of a head and that was ok to most. :D

It happened in '86... saying it "worked", requires some judgement against some criteria...which'll be subjective. I know my friends and I thought it was a pretty stupid name.

Sgt. Kup is fine, though it makes me want to say Sgt. Hound. Something like "Pulse Ion Cannon Kup" might have been a fun little nod too.

I don't know if these other prefixes are really sooo much better than "Autobot" or whatever... it's not like I think of the toy having any prefix to it's name or barely notice it on the package.

"And All That Jazz" would have been better than Special Ops.

I think we have Special Ops Jazz, Sergeant Kup, Solar Storm Grappel, and Turbo Tracks because 3 of the 4 are in the Reveal the Shield line, and putting AUTOBOT in front of their name would kind of eliminate the whole purpose of the Reveal the Shield even more than the packaging already does.
