Most of the article is about the effects of the writer's strike in Hollywood, but this caught my eye:

So, filming starts in June if the strike is over within the next month or two.

Wow that worries me. Could mean they have a rushed crappy script. Or it could mean that awesome treatment was really the basis for the sequel....

the way i read it is thta they are going to start pre-production in june, regardless. if the strike goes past two or three months, then the project will have to eventually be delayed.

i really have a feeling the treatment that leaked is being used, which i love.

It sounds like Orci, Kurtzman and Kruehger got the treatment hammered out, and enough of the script that they can start looking for actors.

More then likely, that means they have the general storyline, the characters, the major events, and for us robot fans, the vehicle modes decided on.

They are already doing preproduction. If this starts filming in June they will have a hard time getting the movie out a year after that. Possible but tight.

Sounds cool to me. I'm thinking this means they have the basic storyline figured out, and have enough settled on for them to get ready to film. After the strike all they really have to do is hammer out the details of the storyline.

Where can I see this "treatment"? I skipped it because everybody said it wasn't being used. Now I'm curious.

That treatment is amongst numerous pitches rejected by Paramount from May to September 2007. This is because Bay wanted Orci and Kurtzman on board. Anyway, it's nice to know something's planned, but really, a massive film like this can't be made with an incomplete script set in stone. Maybe Spielberg could complete it?

Didn't Spielberg say that he would have a finished script in his hands within 30 days a few weeks ago? If that's been the case then a script/near completed script is underway. Pre-production is underway so there must be concepts already done for characters, and major storylines. Because it's the same writers and they had a lot of ideas for the sequel chances are they had already worked out a rough idea for a sequel when they were working on TF1.

Speilberg can't complete the script unless Paramount wants to get in a major fight w/ the Writer's Guild.

With the basic models and programming created for the first movie, making a sequel will be faster, cheaper, and "easier." The first Jurassic Park took 4 years to make. The 3rd one took only a year.

If the first movie is any indication, a TF sequel won't need a script. they can just improv everything, toss in a few blurry giant robots, and call it a movie.

I wonder what they mean by:

"Transformers 2" is far enough along to proceed with [...] advance VFX work,"

    Hmm...

i would think animatics. i know Bay likes to think up crazy action scenes before films are even done.

So not long before Round 2 starts then huh?

"Why is Prowl not a cop car?"

"Why does Soundwave have a mouth?"

"Why don't Wheeljack's ears light up when he talks?"

"Why is Thundercracker brown and not blue?"

    Etc, etc, etc.

    Oh yay, I can't wait...

It probably means that they know which TF characters will appear in the story, old and new alike. That way they can start building new CG models and revamp old ones from the first film.

Even with creating new characters, so much of the basics are done that I do believe that they could still hit a june 09 release if they wanted to, assuming the strike ends before 08 starts.
