Is Sentinel Prime a misquided, tragic hero or a ruthless, scumbag villain? Interested to hear opinions on this.

I'm not too sure, becuase maybe it was his old age that made him act so foolish. Or It could be that an unknown Decepticon leader re-wired his thinking to go against the Autobots.

He was once a great Autobot
even Optimus looked up to him
and learned from him, but he became
a corrupted prime he believed that alining
Himself with the very ones who caused
the war and drove their race to near extinction
Would bring the revival of cybertron.
And he didn't care who he Destroyed in the processes
for he thought he was above, a god to us and
he would most likely destroyed many more
Worlds after he was done with ours.
But in reality he destroyed himself,
He lost what it meant to be a Prime, to bring
peace, to fight for the Freedom of All.
I mean, he had a creepy grin right before killing
Ironhide! He Knew he had a mission to finish and
destroying his own and all the innocent lives was no problem
for him, he was to far gone, he is definitely a Villan!

sentinel knew that optimus had no intention of restoring their home planet, and the best bet for him was align himself with megatron. But sentinel the powerful original leader that he was, he thought team up with megatron overthrown megatron, change the decepticon's ways and it will be like it was before.

he is a hero IMO. Seeing it from the side of a cybertronian atleast a patriotic one he would be . its just because we humans dont see him as one cause he kills humans.
and just because he killed ironhide, well why should only cons get killed.

I voted for "Murderous" villain, he didn't have to kill Ironhide, especially BEFORE letting the Autobots know his fucked up plan. If he talked the right way, he probably could've persuaded some of them to join (lookin' at you, Sideswipe). He automatically assumed that they wouldn't aid him (to be fair, it makes sense), but good leaders know it is wiser to keep the enemy's kingdom intact.

There is also the idea of enslaving an innocent sentient race.

Wow this is a Long post sorry

Sentinel had made a deal with Megaton so that
their race would be saved but their freedom would not be.
For Megatron wanted power, he even wanted the Allspark itself
in making that deal, Megatron would probable
get what he wanted, to Rule a fully
    energized cybertron and the Universe.
    I'm sure most Cybertronians
wouldn't want to live under Megatron's Rule, thats
why the war was started, They wanted freedom, where
as the deceptions and Megaton wanted tyranny.
And the Allspark wasn't Released until After Sentinel left
to rendezvous with Megatron I think.
So why did he make a deal? Because he believed that
they couldn't win the war. And that all was lost.
And that killing other Planets with life on it was the answer, for their race
was superior and we are nothing more then a work force and expandable
little insects and that all others are to be sacrificed for their needs.
And I believe Optimus said in the first Movie when he was speaking about the Allspark:
"We scattered across the Galaxy hoping
to find it and Rebuild our home" so I think Optimus was
trying to rebuild their home but not at the cost of killing
Innocent beings for that is not the way of a true Prime :thumbs2:

Not sure how being a patriot would somehow be a hero type quality...Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian mass murderer considered himself a patriot - that doesn't make him a hero though...

unless you saw it from the perspective of other racist right wing extremists...

but if you look at it from that perspective, you would have to classify Megatron as a hero of the decepticons, instead of a villain :p

A Hero is after all merely someone who performs great deeds, to label someone good or evil based on those deeds is merely a matter of perspective.

To the Taliban, Bin Laden was a hero and the US is considered evil.
To the US, Bin Laden was considered a villain and the Taliban are considered evil.

    etc, etc.

He's like Ozymandias from Watchmen; he's hero that believes in a means to an end. He realises that there are no shortcuts to victory and decides to sell out his friends and allys to achieve lasting peace. In doing so however, he also betrays his beliefs and the teachings that he passed down to his friend and student, Optimus Prime.

I went with "well intentioned extremist" Although he murdered Ironhide :) / I can't forgive him for that...) in the end he seemingly did have Cybertron's best interest at spark. Perhaps when he first started his campaign, his views and beliefs would be more credible, but after a while it seems he just lost his way...

    1) Betraying the one (Optimus) who idolized you
    2) Aligning yourself with the one (Megatron) who nearly drove your race to extinction (BRILLIANT move there :rolleyes2 )
    3) attempting to enslave another race
    4) attempting to kill Optimus and all the other Autobots
    5) Killing Ironhide

    = murderous scumbag traitorous villain

Killed Ironhide + Willing to kill all the other Autobots, including Prime + willing to enslave humanity + made a deal with those responsible for the destruction of his precious planet in the first place = murderous villain.

    The math adds up.

I agree he is a murdurous villian. When He destroyed Ironhide with his acid rust gun, I saw red I was fumming. As far as I am concerned Sentinal does not deserve to call himself a Prime
