Do you view the Autobots introduced in the '86 movie as Cybertronian vehicles or 1985 ideas for what 2005 cars would look like - and what informs that opinion.

I have always assumed that they were intended to be futuristic Earth Cars. They were all stationed at Autobot City on Earth and Ultra Magnus was undeniably an Earth truck with what appeared to be a futuristic trailer. The franchise being what it was, I assumed as a kid that everyone introduced with him were also futuristic Earth vehicles.

This has been coming up a lot lately with the new versions of Blurr, Kup, etc. and it's funny to me that it's the kind of thing we seem divided on, and I wanted to get a consensus on the fandom outlook. So, what say you?

I was under the impression that Blurr was supposed to be something alien while Arcee, Rodimus Prime, and Hot Rod where futuristic cars. Kup always struck me as just poorly designed but I think they were going for retro futuristic with that one.

I don't have the slightest clue what the heck the Technobots are supposed to be.

I believe they are supposed to be Cybertronian. But then again they are made (in the cartoon) by Grimlock out of pieces of Unicron's Brain...so...yeah lol.

Always thought of them as futuristic Earth vehicles. Although, yeah, Blurr is a bit more questionable. He's supposed to be a hover-car, right? Hover-cars in 2005 was pretty optimistic even for 1986 (though I guess Back to the Future predicted them in 2015).

At 1st I thought of them a future cars, but as the seasons went on I started to feel like they were a earth/cyber mix since the were not "hiding" anymore.

I'm going with Cybertronian, and DEFINITELY Cybertronian for the "_____masters" toys.

I'm going with Cybertronian, what human would driver slipper mode Kup, does he even have a windscreen. Though to be honest a lot of them could be either, Magnus is obv earth, we don't know when each of them arrived between season 2 and the movie.

I recall a Hasbro interview saying that they were imagined to be futuristic Earth cars, so I'll go with Hasbro's answer.

That makes sense actually, the movie being set 20 years after season 2 - I suppose Hasbro thought we'd all be driving hot rods and flying doorstops by now.

Personally I think of them as cybertronian, if you look at the other vehicles seen in season 3 there isn't really anything that hints at them being Earthen. I understand how they could be retro futuristic but the autobots mostly stayed around Autobot city and those who weren't looked to be more 80s earth vehicles.

I think the line is really blurry. Maybe the futuristic Earth designs were already based on Cybertronian forms.

A character like Hot Rod seems to have an Earth mode, but he looks weird enough to go for Cybertronian.

I always thought they were supposed to be futuristic, since in 1986, 2005 sounds like it was 100s of years away

futuristic earth modes, the car modes in the first eps on g1 look mostly like hover vehicles (jazz,bb,wheeljack) which could mean blurr's alt mode is cybertronian

I just always assumed Cybertronian. It never even crossed my mind that they were furture Earth vehicles until this thread.

I guess both are right and neither is wrong?

I always thought they were carried-over from Cybertron since Transformers were more commonly accepted on Earth and they didn't need "disguises" so much anymore. But now this thread has me second guessing myself.

My childhood has been blown wide-open. XD
