SDF-1 Macross at Botcon?

    they had preproduction boards for all the planets in Cybertron, and used existing mech and robot designs from other series for examples, so SDF1 is akin to Cybertron Metroplex....

    As Artie said, when in the early stages of production, toy teams will often use other images or toys to give a rough idea of what they plan to do, in this case, SDF-1 was used to similar the idea that the Giant planet characters would be large, and the SDF-1 is a recognizable perception of that.

    You can also see this in early work done on Transtech, in that Gundam models were used as a frame of reference, and back in the early 90s, a Toy Biz X-Men figure was used as a mockup for an unproduced GI Joe figure
