Because they're desperate and willing to take the chance. That's the only thing I can think of.

    Ebay:
Does eBay/PayPal even cover folks with these sort of scams? Also... do they hold funds temporarily on 0 feedback accounts? I'd think that would make sense in order to curtail some of these scams but...

This. I remember seeing this the other day and thinking it was a scam. I even tried to ask the seller to be sure. But he never got back to me. I already ordered Bruticus from HTS but I was checking for other people. But I think we can all be sure this is a scam.

I think they hold funds temporaily for accounts with 0 feedback. I think you need a maximum feedback of 25 until you get instant funds. At least, that's what I remember anyway.

It that scammer was smart, he'd put up a somewhat-reasonable Buy It Now price, like $89.99 or $125.99 or something. Having the price at $16.86 makes him stick out like a friggin' sore thumb!

They should - I've had an account for 13 years and still have funds held because I don't have 25 feedback as a seller, but I think it depends on the delivery confirmation, not on feedback from the transaction. It may be possible for them to send a bunch of empty boxes and grab the money fast before anyone can register a complaint.

I'm half tempted to buy one just to screw with the seller and get his hopes up.

If he doesn't ship anything, funds refunded.
If he ships anything besides what's advertised, funds refunded (yes, Paypal holds his funds as a new seller).

Even an empty box would cost more than that to ship from Canada, unless it's flattened and placed inside an enveloppe.

I'm not saying the guy shouldn't have been reported but it's not hard to get 56. The limit was 2 so he would only need 28 friends to help him buy the Brutici.
