from what i understand, this is a reboot of the franchise ala Batman Begins, it will be Star Trek and it will incorporate elements and ideas, but wont' exactly be canon
John Cho is awesome--He was always the best part of those "American Pie" movies--He'll be a great Sulu.
Ooh non-canon Trek, I can see the hardcore fans loving that - not! It'll be worse than TF Movie Discussion.
That's the most ******ed thing I've ever heard. They're hiring an Englishman to play a Scotsman? What's wrong with hiring someone who's actually Scottish? This is almost as stupid as Highlander where they've got the Scotsman playing a Spaniard while the American/French guy plays a Scotsman.
you do realize that James Doohan, who played Scotty, was born in Canada and whose parents were Irish, don't you?
Yep but to the best of my knowledge it was him who decided on him being Scottish. It's not like they wrote Scotty out to be Scottish then said "hey, let's hire a Canadian to play him!", Doohan came first. Besides, there's just something wrong with having an Englishman playing a Scotsman and vice versa.
That's pretty creepy, haha. I forgot who Captain Pike was. I've seen the movies and a few episodes from the original series and The Next Generation so I'm not a DIEHARD Star Trek fan but I do enjoy them.
Doohan tried out a few different accents and Roddenberry asked which he preferred. Doohan replied all the best engineers were Scottish, so they went with that. so yeah, you're right there. i guess i don't see the big deal though, but then i'm not English or Scottish so i dont' have a vested interest in either of their prides.
WELSHY! Pegg is a surprise, but a very welcome one. What's a matter Kirk, never taken a short cut before?
It's not really a pride thing, it's just it's so goddamn odd. I just can't imagine Simon Pegg doing Scotty with a decent accent.
Never got into any continuances of the series on TV.... generations was the closest I got to being a fan. That bald guy stewart ruled. And the med was hot for an old chick. But I like watching the Big Screen version of any Star Trek.
Maybe, maybe not. The main rumor I keep seeing is that it starts in the current continuity 24th century, and revolves around someone (purported to be a Romulan) going back in time to kill Kirk and/or Spock. (Hence Leonard Nimoy being in the film as old Spock.) It's further rumored that in the process of this attempt, the timeline gets funky, which could result in changes like Chekov being with the group at an earlier time than shown in TOS.
Being scottish myself, I do think there's a bit of a pride thing at issue here. An Englishmen playing a Scot, given the history, rubs me the wrong way a bit. However, a good actor should be able to play roles from all over the globe. Ewan McGregor, probably the most famous scottish actor working now, has played englishmen, scotsmen, irishmen, americans, the whole gamut. Basically, hire the best actor for the role, and I guess they felt Pegg was the best choice.
