He turns into Blackout's vehicle mode Underside.

He forms Blackout's turboshaft engine (or more accurately he disguises himself as Blackout's chopper mode's engine, since Blackout wouldn't use any conventional propulsion we know of). That's why there's that giant turbine in Scorponok's chest/body.

Actually, if you notice in scenes where blackout is without Scorponok, his entire engine/rotor housing is intact. If you ask me, Scorps forms the tail rotor assembly.

Hmmm...Maybe Scorpy just forms the internal engine parts?

Or maybe, the turbine in his body has nothing to do with Blavkout and is powering Scorponok/s drills/other mechanisms.

I still don't think he forms ANY part of Blackout, since y'know...Scorponok being missing would be kinda noticable when Blackout is in alt mode.

That and when Scorps deploys, Blackout lifts his rotor assembly and Scorps (in his scorpion mode) basically just jumps off of him.

Hmm, I always felt that Scorpy might have his own alt mode. Definitely makes sense with all that armor plating (assuming it isn't parts of Blackout, which is fathomable). Certainly would like an alt mode as opposed to that sorry excuse of a "robot" mode the toy has.

isnt it blatantly obvious that the writing is there for his helicopter-part-alt-mode, why else would it be there

I thought that in the movie right before he made an attack on the little city, that it showed those turbines spooling up, which would make alot of sense if he was powering up his weapons. I may be wrong, but I think that the turbine wasn't going very fast and then it just roared to life, then boom, off with the fireworks. I've only seen the movie twice though, and man that action is fast and hard to see everything...anybody else see that?

That's what I believe, too - up until this thread I kinda just figured that it was obvious.

According to the official Movie Guide:
Scorponok's preffered mode of operation was to 'integrate' himself with battle wreckage.
I thought I read somewhere in the design process that his movie alternate mode inspiration was random military aircraft equipment.

But according to Ben Procter's site it looks like most of you guys are right...http://www.benprocter.com/SITEv2/HTML/ZOOM_Trans/ZOOM_43.html

That would make since. Scorpions are ambush predators so what better way to ambush humans or autobots by looking like debris.
