Scientists Erase Specific Memories in Mice - Yahoo! News

As Alexander Pope wrote in 1717, "How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!/ The world forgetting, by the world forgot./ Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!/ Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd ..." Is memory erasure something that science should dabble with? Are we better off without bad memories, or do our memories and experiences define us as who we are?

Memories are what makes us who we are; the sum of the knowledge and experience we have had is what gives us our individuality. Remove that, and we are lessened.
I've been through some nasty shit; family dying, various messy breakups, one GF killing herself, all sorts of shit. But without those experiences shaping me, I wouldn't be me.
Frankly? This is far scarier than just about any other form of scary/dodgy/morally ambiguous research I have heard of.

Well, you can look at it on the flip side too. If we can erase select memories, then perhaps we can learn to preserve memories as well.

While I wouldn't really want any of my memories erased, this is kinda cool. This could help some people out though, in theory at least, so it's not entirely bad. And like funkatron101 said, they might be able to find out how to do the opposite and preserve certain memories.

the negative uses for this technology far outweigh the potential good uses.

    It WILL be abused.

I'm against this. Though the idea did give us a really good movie (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

For example, movie theaters could secretly install these so when you leave a movie they will erase the experience and you will pay again to see the same movie! Genius!

I would erase ever seeing Star Wars episodes IV, V, and VI. Then go watch I, II, and III again. Maybe they're actually good if you watch em without OT knowledge.

Plus, they could strongly embed the memory of where I always put my keys so I don't have to look for em ever again. Think of the seconds I'd gain!

And of course, what I wouldn't give to erase my early days in German porn...

So is there any point to this research other than to weaponize it in neuralizer form?

This is awesome because it puts us one step closer to Ghost in the Shell and relative immortality.

Can they give me some memories back?

I hit my head (and broke my shoulder) on October 12th and I'm missing a few day's memories.
    No, I'm not kidding.

I'd go watch Beast Wars again, without remembering all the spoilers people told me before I saw it the first time

It could be used, possibly, as an aid to victims of rape or other brutal attacks, or those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, such as soldiers.

And which insurance company is going to cover that? The gov't solved PTS years ago by marginalizing it, then ignoring it altogether.

I'd like to erase each memory of each time I have sex with a girl i'm in a relationship with. That way, it's always new and never gets old... to some effect.
