Customs: Sandpaper Question

    Despite making a few customs, I'm not much of a DIY guy. Some of my newer projects are in dire need of sanding down to remove glue over-run, excess paint, flashing and the like. Trouble is, I don't really understand the grading system for the paper.

    I see grades ranging from P12 to P2500, I'm aware that higher numbers are a finer grit, but I don't know what guage is safe to use on TF plastic. I'd appreciate any input/suggestions since my only way to purchase is eBay, where I obviously can't get a feel for the product.

    Are the higher guages always wet/dry paper? Do they require some kind of lubricant? (I seem to vaguely remember something about it from school, but that was a looooong time ago).

    Please save me from my ignorance :p

    225 is as fine as I go. No real point after that. May as well buff with paper :)

    I do the same as Fishdirt, but i always choose to wet sand any parts i intend to paint. Why? Because it helps to keep to the contours of the piece in question. Dry sanding can leave flat areas, wet sanding for me at least, doesn't.

    Wet sanding also helps keep the dust down, all you do is run the water in your sink, and work there. Wet the sandpaper, do some sanding, repeat as necessary.

    225 is still very coarse. Removing excess glue, plastic is one thing.

    For removing paint however, i'd be more inclined to suggest rubbing alcohol or white spirits.

    Wow, lots of great feedback here.

    I opted to try out 320G STEARATED paper, which apparently means it has lubricant on the paper... mainly for removing excess glue and the odd paint lump (sigh... one day I will afford an airbrush... and a dremel). Will report back when it arrives... now if only my magnets would show up I'd be a happy radicon.

    wow in the paint shop where i work on the car paint they even go to 800 and above for wet sanding which i have done on some custom paint with good results but for heavier stuff the lesser the number the better! so rougher = the lower the number, and finer = higher the number.

    320 seems quite adequate for removing paint/glue over-run etc... think I'll need something finer for painting prep. though - ~600 I'm guessing!

    Not prohibitively expensive.. look up everythingairbrush on eBay UK.

    You don't need a particularly expensive airbrush, or even a particularly powerful air compressor, to get decent results.

    yeah around 600 - 800 gets a good wet/dry effect
