Considering how much cash the LOTR trilogy raked in for the studio, their answer is a resounding YES.

Personally, I would hate to see this project move ahead without Jackson and WETA. Ian McKellan said he won't do it without Peter Jackson and I honestly can't imagine anyone else as Galdalf at this point. Plus he and Ian Holm (Bilbo) are getting too old for this to be delayed too much longer, assuming they'd do it.

I can just imagine the POV "creature" shots for Smaug.

    And the goblins.

    And the spiders.

Rami? Bleh. No thanks. Call me back when he's made a truly impressive movie. He was almost there with Spidey 2, but not quite.

I don't like the idea of directors jumping ships left and right, in effect screwing up a consistent cast, etc, but I'm certainly not against taking a break from Spider-man.

If Jacksom can't do it, Raimi would be my next choice. I'm sure he'd make an awesome Hobbit movie.
And add me to the "find a role for Bruce Campbell" camp! :lol

The LOTR trilogy is one of the very few things I own on DVD for repeat viewings. Jackson, cast, and crew set the bar so ridiculously high on those that I would be shocked if New Line could muster anything close with The Hobbit. I feel lucky that they filmed the trilogy all at the same time, otherwise who knows what we would've gotten for The Two Towers and Return of the King.

Raimi's style is so radically different from Jackson's...

    But, here's hopin' *crosses fingers*

I keep hoping that Newline loses the Hobbit license so wetta can pick it up. Cause I don't think PJ is gonna work with a company that stiffed him out of his contracted percentage just because they think they've already paid him enough money.

It's a dumb move on NL's part anyway since the contract didn't state an upper limit to payments. (tho I bet it goes on every contract they draw up now.) He's gonna sue them and they're gonna have to pay up in the end anyways plus they look like dicks.

Sam could do it, but I think it'd suffer from a backlash. And I think Little Miss Dunst thinks a little too highly of herself when she says Spidy 4 would bomb without her and Sam.

    *Goes and reads article*

Quote from Dunst: "Audiences aren't stupid. It'd be a big flop without me, Tobey or Sam."

Raimi is replaceable, IMHO. There are plenty of good directors out there, as long as they respect the material (And Raimi has taken plenty of liberties that have bugged me as a long-time reader of Spidey's comics :mad  ).

Dunst is expendable. Bring on a hottie in the role of Black Cat! :p

Maguire...recasting Maguire would be very risky/tough after three movies. Mainly because the role of a lovable everyman is hard to pull off. Although Maguire's voice grates on my nerves in all the trailers I've seen so far of Spidey three >.<
