What is this "rust cannon" everyone is talking about? Is this something that is confirmed? or is it just a fan name for it since Ironhide was shot and killed and rusted away. Because I for one think the "rusting away" of Ironhide happened for two reasons.

1.) They needed it too. Optimus has the matrix which they have already established can revive the robots if they want to, so if they wanted to kill of Ironhide for good, they would need to make his body unrevivable. And since he can't be torn into 2 by sentinel like Jazz a la Megatron, the whole "fading away" concept was used.

2.) There is a lot of headshots in the franchise, but few spark-shots. I think Ironhide was hit by Sentinel's second shot directly at his spark which pretty much obliterated it causing Ironhide to rust and fade away. It makes somewhat sense, since their sparks are what keep their parts going.

The novel refers to it as a cosmic rust cannon if I am not mistaken

Are you talking about the Matrix reviving Sentinel? Because he was only in stasis lock, not dead.

fact, in the concept art for sentinel prime it stated he had a "cosmic rust cannon"

in g1 and many other series, cosmic rust is a plague that affects transformers by causing them to rust away and die

we see animated rodimus get infected with it as well

No, Sentinel's gun was a rust cannon. When he was shooting at Bumblebee you can see that all the metal things the missed shots hit (a truck trailer, shipping crates, etc.) began to rust immediately afterwards.

    What? Its THE BEST.

Also, the fact that Sentinel's gun is also his shield is BADASS.

Ok then, my mistake. So if it is a rust cannon, does everything the ammo hits instantly turn to rust? Or does it have to be a fatal shot or something?

To me, it seems like the weapon simply disintegrates any metal it hits (like the crates BB used for cover), presumably, us organics would be largely unaffected by it (though it seems the "delivery" method had secondary explosive characteristics)

You can see in the film Ironhide was very much alive while his body disintegrated (I couldn't imagine a more horrible death for a Transformer, Sentinel got off lucky)

Meh, it's not that big a mistake.

Anyway, I believe that any metal object that it touches is destroyed.

There's another thread talking about its use. Sentinel does shoot Sideswipe with it during the final battle, though he doesn't die. I believe the general consensus is that it has two settings (like a phaser): Standard Blaster, a lesser damage shot that is more efficient on the guns power source, and Rust Cannon, a high damage, near one-hit KO that uses significant power.

Every shot = everything touch turns to dust. It's basically a bitch of a weapon and if they ever make a proper TF game with tons of weapons they better not include this weapon.

Actually, I don't think it would be that bad. Make it a recharge ability, like Ironhides "Heavy Iron" in the DOTM game. You get three shots, and a long recharge timer after you're out of shots. No splash damage, and a direct hit could eat away at your health until you've lost a third of it, perhaps.

    Acid rust in the novel.

It seems to work differently in the novel too, it shoots like a thick plasma that actually melts him into a puddle starting with his entire head dissolving while he was still alive. Pretty gruesome.

The gun in the movie seems to blow big chunks out of things while also infecting them with cosmic rust if they're made of metal. Was a clever touch that when he rusts to pieces you see his rubber tyre is completely untouched.

Either way it's a scary ass weapon if you're Cybertronian.
