From Rich Johnston's Lying in the Gutters column at Comic Book Resources:

The rumor is given a yellow light, meaning it's not 100% certain, but quite likely.

Interesting explanation for the drastically different designs in the movie, no?

<-- Is also confuzled. Though I think the "spin-off" cartoon they're talking about is Heroes, or whatever it's called now. Not an actual MOVIE spin-off cartoon.

The movie robots look different so that fans will buy Classics? That doesn't make any sense at all. I think the writer or their informant is confused.

It makes sense to me. If Prime looks the same for the movie as well as original or upcoming cartoon, they'll only sell one prime, but if you like the original or upcoming cartoon prime and the movie prime, then you'll buy 2 primes. It increases the variety of merchandise out there. I for one hope for more throw back to the original stuff, but I'm so looking forward to the movie.

Now THIS is a fantastic rumor - one which I hope turns out to be true. The way I read it, however, is that they're referring to "old toys" as being anything that isn't related to the movie toys, which could (hopefully) mean Classics getting a greenlight to be co-mainline. Considering Hasbro has already reissued a bunch of the original G1 figures under the "Commemorative Edition" moniker, I can't see them relaunching it yet again, especially since it's so limited in terms of engineering & articulation compared to more recent lines.

Whatever happens, this will be interesting to follow and see how it develops.

This guy doesn't do April Fools jokes. He's not a big Transformer fan, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if he can't distinguish between Heroes and a movie toon or between Classics and G1 reissues (or even just more conventional designs in Heroes). Still, the guy is usually pretty well informed (he totally called the downfall of Dreamwave, for example). I, for one, am going to trust that he's on to something.

It would look to me as if they could have both the movie aesthetic and a more traditional, I'll call it "classic" aesthetic continue in parallel fashion. Perhaps not unlike the 12" and 3-3/4" G.I. Joe lines.
