Just watch X-Box show the X-Box 720 with Playstation showing a last minute presentation of the PS4. Or vise-versa.

I saw that on IGN the other day. If this comes to pass, Nintendo is going to be in the same position they were this gen: lagging behind the rest of the competition.

Don't we hear this every year?
If it's true this time around, then this.

Can we really improve on the current consoles though?

There's definitely room for improvement, although I don't imagine there being much in the way of innovation. Hardware constantly gets better every year, and we're talking about consoles from as early as 2005.

What blows my mind is that the 360 is still running on just 512 megs of ram. Sure, the hardware works a little bit differently than a computer, but half a gig of ram is still crazy, considering the results.

Playstation said, the last time I heard, that the PS3 is going to be at least a ten year system, if that's true the next one won't be for another 4 years or so. Also as for Xbox, they have a patent for the new model/system where it'll also be a DVR. That's as far as I've heard, also as for "new PS and Xbox" mentioned in the article, I highly doubt it'll be a whole new system, but more likely an updated version of their current format. As for Xbox being called 720 I doubt that, it'll probably be something lame like Xbox: Elite, or something along the lines of that.

I really, really hope not. Can't they just wait for the next innovation to hit? I mean, PS1 came with CD. PS2, DVD. PS3, Blu-R. PS4, Blu-Ray, with a new hardrive? Right now I can't see that theres much room to improve.

X-Box on the other hand... they've got plenty refining to do. Add Blu-Ray, not make the AC Adaptor as big as the system itself, no red ring...

Sony has said each Playstation is a 10 year system, and they've released the next model around 6 years each time. They continue to support the old model for the years after, but aside from a few gems, it quickly turns to crap software, and everything comes out for the new system.

We're probably a looong way out from the next optical format, but the hardware itself has a long way to improve. The insides of systems are actually laughably weak compared to even an off the shelf computer today.

Ugh, this. I have yet to get all the games I want for this gen. I am at loathe to say this, but it'll be a long time before I can jump on the next gen; even if I'm able to do it sooner, I'll only be able to afford one console this time round.

We don't need new consoles yet. The current ones are good enough.

I understand that when people say the new systems are unnecessary they must be talking with their wallets. Not wanting to pay for something new, but come on, a new system with updated graphics, more RAM, etc... That would be nothing but awesome.

Money's not an issue/drawback for me personally, but I still don't feel liek seeing them announced just yet simply because it doesn't feel at ALL like these consoles have been taken to their potentials yet.
