Don't get your hopes up, Avatar will win and deserve it.

In B4 IT'S JUST SOME ANIMALS AND BLUE PEOPLE AND A PLANET THAT'S NO WAY NEAR AS COMPLICATED AS A GIANT PHOTOREAL ROBOT!!!!!!!!!

    I think 3D should have it's own catagory, it's a bit unfair to judge 3D vs 2D

all these films have excellent VFX tho

They need a separate "best results for the money" category---District 9 would easily win there.

Avatar and ROTF both looked great in different ways. If Avatar won I wouldn't be surprised or upset. I did strongly disagree with part 1 losing to Golden Compass though.

Also, Avatar was fully 3d and fillmed in imax. Transforers had what, 1 minute of imax video?

I fully suspect that every blockbuster from here in will be 3d. It'll become as much the norm as imax showings

Don't want to spoil the party but there is no way on god's blue earth that Avatar won't win for visual effects. There has never been anything more certain than Weta Workshop winning for their groundbreaking work on Avatar. TF2 was good effects, but it was sloppy seconds, been there, done that in '07.

    Avatar is the winner. Period.

yeah I cant speak for district 9 as I hav enever seen it, but Avatar vs ROTF, no comparison. Its like comparing a major league baseball team to one of thos pro expansion teams you have in your hometown.

Avatar IS VFX. 70% of what you see on screen is a VFX shot. they made EVERYTHING in that move just about using VFX. And it looks freakin real, AND it sin IMAX 3D.

If Avatar Does not win, then it would be highway robbery pure and simple. I am not talking about the story, love it or hate it. I am talking plain up VFX.

ROTF was impressive VFX and deserves to be top three sure, but Avatar tops it in spades.

Well guess what all,I am sure ROTF will probably lose out to Terminator Salvation or that
high priced cartoon Avatar, simply coz they like seeing Ugly Blue Alien Women running from
a fight. Its Golden Compass all over again.

Gonna stab myself in the foot here but...

Transformers does not deserve this award, most of the FX were used unnecessarily...and boo to Avatar, while the FX in this are something new, I don't feel it justifies an award...no story = LAME.

Star Trek or District 9 should take this award, both were superior movies and the FX were much more integrated into the film, which in MHO is more important. The integration of FX into actual cinema is crucial to building that 4th Wall in film making...

ROTF winning would be a complete surprise. It'll probably come down to either Avatar or 2012. And to be honest, the first movie made a stronger case for Best VFX at the '08 Oscars than its sequel. I still feel Golden Compass shouldn't have won, but I can understand why it did.

p.s. I enjoyed Avatar and I'm not going to hate on it for potentially winning the VFX category.

Surely, VFX is an Oscar category that awards the most seamless and believable integration of visual effects (CG or otherwise) into a real-world environment. Having not actually caught the film yet, I ask the question - does Avatar achieve this in any way, shape or form, as I thought the entire film was CG?

If my initial premise is in fact sound, then District 9 should get the gold, no question whatsoever. ROTF doesn't come anywhere close.

ROTF's probably not going to come up with it in the end. Too many critical complaints about ambiguous, sloppy, illegible fight scenes will probably hurt it in the end.

I think it'll be Avatar, District 9, and Star Trek as the final 3, with Avatar the clear favorite.
