    Stiff competition.

It was fun while it lasted, but Avatar is going to kick the ass of everything there.

Not because it's good, mind you (though it kinda sorta is) but because it's OMG JAMES CAMERON and THE BEST THING EVER.

    Edit: post #4,000!

Even though I hated this movie, I have to agree that this movie should be a finalist for this category. The VFX were amazing.

So far I don't see any talking polar bears offering up competition (The first movie was fucking ROBBED!), but like Sso02V said, Avatar may beat it based solely on who directed the movie, which shouldn't even be a reason for why it should win, because this is VFX.

How does G-Force get anywhere close to the Oscars? That should have been eliminated before the rounds began.

Say what you will about ROTF, but I do not think kids movies today are even close to deserving an Oscar. That stopped about the time Disney abandoned 2D animation.

Tough competition this year, from the looks of it. I'd imagine Avatar is going to end up winning, but I wouldn't be surprised to see RotF make the top 3.

RotF won't win. Too many corners cut. And WTF are Rise of Cobra and G-Force doing on that list? What, did they nominate every movie with VFX that came out this year?

And who is the king of VFX? Who knows, like no other how to blend CGI and practical effects? Who put Stan Winston on the map? Avatar will win, of that I have little doubt. For both the CGI and the 3D implementation. If not Avatar, then District 9 for proving that you can have outstanding CGI for little money.

I said it before when the first movie was nominated. Transformers will not win, because it suffers from the same stigmatism that Star Trek had to deal with. It's based on a TV show, and the academy has always frowned on movies that are based on shows. Star Trek has been nominated 10 times for several of its films and has never won.

Star Trek, G.I. Joe, and TF:ROTF will not win, because of this. It's a shame. ILM did some intricate and amazing things with ROTF and shouldn't be overlooked.

And I agree with Opticron Primal, the first movie was robbed. Polar bears my a**!

Honestly, this isn't too surprising. The semi-finalist list just ticks off major flicks that had substantial effects work (anything more than simple compositing or cleanup). The real chatter will start once the actual nominees are revealed in January.

Aa-ah-ah-aaah, but that's like, implementing reasonable basis/actual reasons on why something wins rather than the point mentioned in the other quote. :)

I didn't realize that Sherlock Holmes was going to be a special effects heavy film.

James Camer...I mean, "Avatar" is going to win.
I'll be shocked if RotF is even in the list of final nominees.

You're not understanding what I'm saying, then, dude. Like someone else said, the TF movies will have no chance at winning any Oscars. The board is bias when it comes to picking what wins in some of the categories. I mean LOOK at what won over the first TF movie! The Golden Compass had the most noticeable CGI of any live action movie that came out that year yet it won over Transformers, whose CGI was almost seamless!

District 9 is a perfect example of what movie should win. That CGI was well done. It looked like it was completely real. Avatar, from what I've seen, looks noticeable, expecially the feral creatures we see, but it's probably gonna come out on top because Cameron is associated with it. It's basically a game of favorites.

Whether you hate Bayformers or not, you have to admit the special effects and animation really are spectacular, in my opinion. The last Transformers movie made it to the final three in the Oscars back in '08, so it wouldn't surprise me if ROTF gets picked, even if it ends up losing to someone else. I have a feeling that ROTF will clean up at the next MTV Movie Awards, as the first movie did.

Also, could someone tell me why the hell G-Force was nominated? Seriously, since when do talking guinea pigs count as Oscar-worthy?!
