Had him as a kid and I really liked the toy. Kinda hard to transform and ...different, I found out today that it was designed by the same guy that designed Jetfire! How many other transformers, besides diaclone, were like this?

Well the most famous are Whirl and Shockwave that were borrowed from other toy lines, same way Jetfire and Roadbuster were.

eh this is an easy one.

just google up pre-TFs. besides diaclone and microchange, you end up with toyco, toybox, takatokus and that subline the deluxe insecticons came from.

Lessee, 1984 was entirely taken from Microchange and Diaclone. The Minibots, Soundwave and his cassettes, Megatron and Reflector were all from Microchange, the rest are Diaclones.

1985, Blaster and Perceptor were the only Microchange molds, the cars and jets were Diaclone, as were the Dinobots, Insecticons, Jumpstarters, Triple Changers, Devastator, Powerdashers and Omnibots. The rest are the other licenses - Omega Supreme was ToyCo I think, same company that made Sky Lynx. Shockwave I'm not sure on, Takatoku made Beetras, from which the Deluxe Insecticons are descended, while a company that like Takatoku would be swallowed up by Bandai made the Deluxe Autobots and Jetfire.

The 1985 Minibots are genuine oddities, I can't recall them ever appearing in Microchange so I assume they were produced by Hasbro, or possibly culled from Microchange designs that Takara didn't use.

1986 was the last year of non-Takara toys, only real one there is Sky Lynx. After that, everything was Takara / Hasbro made.

Roadbuster & Whirl look awesome. I had the chance to get a Roadbuster on eBay yesterday, but I passed it up in favour of a Goodbye Convoy giftset that was going cheap. I'll have one sooner or later, though.
