does anyone else think that rise of the planet of the apes was better than dark of the moon? I'm able to find more things to complain about in dark of the moon than I am in rise of the apes. maybe it's predecessors are making dark of the moon less likeable but I still feel rise of the planet of the apes was better than dark of the moon

Tons of things were way better than DotM. But Rise of the Apes was one of the best movies of last year, hands down.

Rise was a good film, can't wait for the sequel. Bay wasn't going for an Oscar. His job was to, how did Hasblo put it, "fill more seats than a prison rapist", so don't expect gold.

Of course it was better, because it was made to make people love it, not to get our money with Baysplosions and sexual appeal. As Bountyan said, it was solid. Way more than the earthquake that was DOTM.

I thought DOTM was far better, but then again I thought ROTPOTA had crappy special effects all things considered. Not for one second did I think I was looking at a real ape, not for a second. DOTM had better action, better pacing, and better Special effects. Making it a superior movie in my opinion, no offense to POTA, I've got it on blu-ray but i can't hardly watch it because I don't like the way Caesar looks. I personally prefer DOTM, but POTA was good too.

When it comes to getting the plot going and getting to know the characters, Apes win. But I did not like Rise of the Planet of the Apes for nearly that very reason. I found most of the human characters to be bland and generic. You have the greedy corporate guy, the cruel jerk whos death is supposed to be justified, the good guy doctor, and the a**hole who doens't care what he does. I found the ape behavior to be unrealistic. Apes are much smarter than the wild hollering idiots they showed. In the ape crowd scenes, I could really tell it was CGI. The only time I found the CGI convincing is when it focused on Ceaser.
DOTM wasn't the best when it comes to plot but the effects were better. There wasn't enough characterization though. When I watch movies I sit back and enjoy the ride the first time I watch it and DOTM was perhaps the greatest thrill ride ever.
All in all I would rather watch DOTM than Apes simply because I enjoy the visuals and action even though the plot and character development wasn't as good.

Depends on what you are looking for in a movie.

Rise of the planet of the apes is better. Much better. I geeked out whenever they referenced the old planet of the apes movies more than I did when dotm referenced old G1 stuff.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a much superior film. I do like DOTM, too. They're very different films, though. I'm not sure if they should really be compared. I suppose they fall into the same genre, but that’s it. They certainly don’t fall into the same sub-genre.

Agreed. I liked RotPotA alright, but I enjoyed watching DotM MUCH more. I just watched DotM again the other night with my kids and was just blown away by it, again. I never felt like that with Apes...

There were way more transforming robots in DotM than there were in RotPotA! It was way better! :p

Oh, wait. Sorry. I thought we were supposed to act like these two movies were trying to tell the same story/achieve the same thing. My bad.

They're too different movies attempting two different things. Comparisons only go so far, you know? Anywho, RotPotA is a much better film, no question about that, and it's easily in my top ten favs of all time, but I'm a sucker for Transformers, so that's the reason why I prefer DotM. :D

EDIT: Basically the same as Krueger above me. :)

DOTM is more fun to watch, but RoPA is better in terms of story. I was a bit disappointed that the relationship with Caesar and James Franco stopped developing halfway through, but it was pretty good.
