It has been anounced that perhaps the greatest Star Wars concept artist, Ralph Mcquarrie has died. Anyone who has known and loved Star Wars knows that his work gave way to the masterpiece many Star Wars fans love. 'perhaps'?!!

Before i became a collector back in 00s i knew a bit abt mcquarrie from being a film fan so the coolest thing i discovered back then were the pre finalized vader, skywalker designs.

Also, i could be wrong, were the postcards done when they moved to skywalker ranch.

This one man's concept art sparked the imagination of practically my entire generation as children and hasn't stopped yet. The slideshow of his work in the link says it all. He will be missed, to say the least.

Sad, but he had a good run and leaves behind an incredible body of work to remember him by, and a legacy of inspiration that will echo throughout our generation, and the ones that follow for a long, long time.

    Godspeed, McQuarrie.

Ralph Mcquarrie was responsible for some of the greatest bits of Star Wars lore.

A good example is he did concepts for a Helmeted Darth Vader that would be used in space (despite there being no call for this) and Lucus loved the concepts so much they became permanent.

Without that we wouldn't have a 'broken man' Vader, wouldn't have the voice of Thusa Doom and we would have been stuck with 'Darth Farmer'.

RIP Ralph. Your work will be remembered, always.

McQuarrie had a huge influence on me when I was finishing high school/starting college and was getting into Art Deco, concept art, and the related art style.

I had Lithographs of his work on my bedroom wall for years. Great stuff to look at.

    RIP.

I can remember being about 6 or 7, when my Star Wars mania was just beginning - my parents gave me a book about the movie that had all kinds of concept art from the development of the movie. I really wasn't old enough to understand a lot of what the book talked about, but one name did stand out - Ralph Mcquarrie. His work had a tremendous influence on my life, and I will be thankful to him for the outstanding work he did.

Actually earlier drafts of the script had Vader jumping from the star destroyer to the Tantive V. Like a black shadow in a space suit. Was what McQuarrie said he was told about how Vader should look.
