I heard about this on Xplay this evening on G4. Oh well I guess maybe people will start with Rockband then or they will play actual instruments.

It had it's day. It was fun to play. As the years went on, it got less fun.

It was a silly franchise to begin with, one that smelled of short term

Couldn't care less about GH, but I was really looking forward to the new True Crime game!

Such a sad day. I own both GH & RB and they're both great fun at parties, just rockin' out with a bunch of friends. Oh well, c'est la vie. Hope RB can carry on, I just bought the keytar last December...DLC FTW!

But IMO when going solo, GH was a little more challenging, thus a bit more enjoyable. However, the franchise was deep-sixed with that last release: songs and everything were all over the place.

I'm not surprised by the demise of Guitar Hero, because Activision was practically running the franchise into the ground with at least one GH game out per year, and they always give much less DLC support compared with Hermonix. I think the best years were when Hermonix was the developer, and after they left to make Rock Band I think Activision was just copying RB and they lacked any real innovation on their own. I hope Rock Band will continue even as the consumers gotten tired about this genre in recent years.

Considering Harmonix just got kicked to the curb by Viacom and sold for $50 + liabilities I'd say Harmonix isn't in too much of a good place either.

Can't really say I'm surprised. At all. Activision pretty much beat the genre to death with the constant game releases for $60 a pop. Should've stuck to the same plan that sports games use: 1 game a year, nothing more. Sucks that Harmonix too is paying for the price for Activision's stupidity.

Dude come on. The majority of these people are about to get kicked to the curb or will get shoehorned onto another project, most likely another CoD title.

I honestly think that when you have a franchise that's FORCED to be annualized and produce a title every year you don't have much wiggle room to grow. I think Neversoft and the like did the best with what they could.

The games are fun and I put more time into them than any other games I have. That's both Guitar Hero and Rock Band games. I fail to see how they're overrated.

I still stand by the fact the GH sold out a while back and it's end was only a matter of time.

Even so, that doesn't change the fact that people are gonna end up jobless from this. Can only hope that some of them are picked up by EA and Harmonix.

EDIT: And to the people saying "Well now maybe people will learn to actually play a real instrument.", it's thanks to games like GH and RB that people become more interested in playing the real things. Hell I now own a keyboard and aim to own a drumset and music games are part of the reason for that.
