I haven't played in years but still have many fond memories of playing back in the day. Rest in peace friend.
I have actually have had the pleasure of meeting him at GenCon 2000. The modern gamming world has lost its father. *rolls 21 d20 Salute*
Had it not been for Gary and a few fearless others, we wouldn't have the modern gaming worlds we know now, both tabletop and video. I hope he's in a better place fighting some dragons and collecting some loot.
It took me a bit since i forgot the name of the poem but thankfully KoDT's parent site had it up for Gary. The Empty Chair Eulogy for a Gamer There is an empty chair, at the table this day. A hallowed place where, a friend once played. The roll of his dice, my ears long to hear. Or perhaps it would suffice, if he should suddenly appear. With character sheet in hand, and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share. All his friends would stand, as he sat in the empty chair. I hear his voice a-callin’, and it ties my heart in a knot. For he cries, “Though a comrade has fallen, You must play for those who cannot.” We conquered worlds on the run, he and I in the name of fun. And as others may come and go, I make both both friend and foe. But what I long for most, is our past now long a ghost.
Always always loved Dungeons and Dragons and the hundreds of inspirations it had in my life. From writing, to sparking imagination, to some funny "Where are the Cheetos" moments with my friends. Gary will be missed, but his legacy will live on. I think I'm going to talk some friends into revisiting an old campaign in Gary's name.
The godfather of gaming, the duke of DnD, the archbishop of rpgs. He is no longer here, but do not weep. He has not left us, he has only moved to the other side of the screen.
R.I.P. Mr. Gygax your games brought me countless hours of fun (and you were awesome on Futurama). Anyone else think the first building he walked in to on the other side was a tavern?
Hiro Prime had his D&D group do a moment of silence for Gary (just about everybody there honored it) and my D&D group left a open chair for Gary for the weekly game... and i think he took it. Crits upon crits all around the table. I rolled 3 criticals in a row (My Warforged Fighter has a Keen weapon and Improved Critical) on an enemy.
I was saddened by the news, I really wish I could have met him in person. A guild on the wow server I play on changed their guild tabard to black for this month in tribute to his death, and I"m going to offer a monment of silence in the next guild raid that mine has.
