Pink Floyd's keyboardist and founding member Richard Wright passed away today following a struggle with cancer. With Syd Barret's passing a couple years back, this makes Wright the second of Floyd's main five members to have died.

I've been a huge fan of this band for years, and it's really sad to see one of its members pass away.

Cancer's a bitch. Best wishes to his friends and family, it's never good to see someone with that much history go out.

Heard about it on the radio at work yesterday. Pink Floyd rocks (kinda ironic that I can't stand the Animals album, IMO)

RIP, Richard Wright. You'll sorely be missed :(

PF is without question my favorite band and this saddens me immensely. On a selfish note, I'm sad we'll never see a full fledged reunion tour now, had always dreamed about seeing the classic Floyd lineup in concert. But my sympathies and condolences go out to his family and loved ones. A true legend has passed.

Not a fan but I have a massive respect for the Floyd, and was sad to hear this on the radio earlier.

    RIP.

For those who may only be casually familiar with Floyd, there were EIGHT albums prior to DSotM and Wright was a MUCH larger contributor as a singer and songwriter back in those days. Many of my favorite Floyd tracks are from that era (1967-1972).

Wright's last lead vocal on a PF track for the better part of the band's history is (I believe) on DSotM. In the song 'Time', he sings the "Tired of lying in the sunshine..." bit.

Once Gilmour and Waters emerged as the power singers/songwriters, Wright was relegated to pretty much a "side man"... in fact, he didn't appear on The Final Cut and was paid salary for the 1987 tour... and was not even considered a full member. However, he was featured prominently on 1994's Division Bell (which is a brilliant record) and had a return to the lead vocal spot for "Wearing the Inside Out".

The albums prior to DSotM... can't say enough good about these :

Piper at the Gates of Dawn
    Saucerful of Secrets
    More
    Ummagumma
    Atom Heart Mother
    Relics (compilation)
    Meddle
    Obscured by Clouds

As I understand it, he and Waters had a major falling out after The Wall, which lead to Wright leaving the group for the remainder of Waters's tenure (if he left willingly or if Waters booted him out, I don't remember). Once the group was just Gilmour and Mason, Wright joined back up. I don't think he was full back in the band for Momentary Lapse of Reason, but he did help out on that album some (when they remastered the CD back in the 90s they changed the group picture by editing Wright in alongside Gilmour and Mason). He and Gilmour wrote the instrumental track Marooned for the Division Bell, which won a Grammy that year.
