As I'm sure many of you are aware, I've been extremely dissatisfied with my city's governing body for some time. I had planned to run for my district's City Council seat when it comes up in 2 years time. However, a conversation with a local political DJ has changed my plans a bit. He offered to be my campaign manager if I filed to run for Mayor of Topeka, Kansas and, after speaking with my wife and my close friends, I have decided to do so. I file my paperwork Monday morning. I've done a lot of things in jest or halfassed in the past. As such, the standard reaction when I spoke to people was for them to laugh nervously, then ask if I was serious. Let me assure you all, I am very serious. Topeka is a city with severe problems. I don't anticipate actually being elected, but by running, I hope to bring these issues to light and force the city council to pay attention to the electorate and, God willing, actually do something about them. It is my hope that the exposure I'll recieve running for mayor will help my campaign for City Council down the road. Though, given the poor voter turnout here in Topeka, combined with a distinct lack of people filing to run, there is a real chance I can win this thing. Whatever happens, I just hope and pray that I can do something, anything to improve this town that I'm raising my son in. Right now, it's going down the toilet. I'm going to strive to change that.
