I never even realized this before, but Rhinox's whole character change in Beast Machines is foreshadowed in the BW Season 1 episode "Dark Designs". Megatron chose him over all of the other Maximals to try and turn to his side, and when he was a Pred, Rhinox was pretty devious and villainous. I've heard a lot of fans upset about the way he was treated later on in Beast Machines, but it goes to show that with a little bit of corruption, Rhinox really DID have that little bit of badness in him. Maybe his second corruption just brought it out for real.

Rhinox's change in character was actually well-written, it's just people didn't think that someone who fought for good for so long could turn bad.

Simple fact of the matter is when Megatron removed their sparks, brainwashed them, and "rebooted" them so to speak, they were unknowingly and uncontrolably bad, even if they were concious for it.

    In the case of Rhinox
    Tankor
, he states that his time spent as
    Tankor
made him realize just how futile the entire organic thing was, how much endless time was spent trying to coexist with organic, and how easier it would be if the organic part was gone. But after he
    died
, he does communicate with Primal's spark and is Rhinox again, and not a bad guy. So who knows.

I think what upset fans most of all is that they went through all that foreshadowing, all that trouble to set up Tankorr only to have him
die like a bitch right when things were getting good.

I always thought Megs did the same thing to him as he did in beast wars, expected him to betray him, and used Rhinox like he used Trantulas during season 2 and 3 of Beast Wars. It all fits as something Megatron would come up with since pretty much all his troops died. He likes people he can control and manipulate. Megatron was never a fan of unknown factors.

Yeah they had good set ups but crappy outcomes. The characterization never seemed the same as in Beast WArs, and it lost most of the humor and got a little too dark.

    Except for that one time:

Megatron: Then I have one high-risk option left.
    Inferno: And that is?
Megatron: Gamble, and hope the dice roll in my favor.

But yes I get what you're saying.

I also really enjoyed Rhinox's character arc and thought that the Tankor part was a logical extension.

I don't know if I would use the word crappy, but certainly their setups ended fast. Of course, considering the episode constraints it is understandable, if not lamentable.

I still like to pretend that Beast Machines only exists in an alternate dimension. ;)

Kind of like the alternate ending to "Army of Darkness"?

Me too. Though I am glad he was good ol' Rhinox again after he died. He's smellin' flowers in the matrix, now.

I was actually hoping the 'Rhinox plan' for taking over Cybertron in BM would succeed. (insert evil laugh here <--)

His turn as Tankor was one of the best things about the show. It's the way he exited stage right that irked me. He really was the glue that held the team together through all of Beast Wars and without him, the Maximals just weren't the same.

Doesn't it seem like they re-used the "evil Rhinox" plot from Beast Wars to Beast Machines?

Not so much a 'reuse' as it is the return of a plotpoint, with more story driven emphasis.

I think the whole Rhinox arc in Beast Machines was pretty good.
It was well written save for the abrupt ending.

Which is part of the reason why I wondered why he got rid of everyone else on Cybertron. If they were all in a giant lightning bug jar then he was manipulating no one.

In fact that is my main gripe about Beast Machines; by the end of it they no longer seemed like Transformers at all, but rather seemed like balls of light that happened to reside in robots.

    AMEN!

When it comes to BM, nope. :D  BM is just an Optimus Primal nightmare from eating a bad banana. :lol

With the exception of the treatment of Father Primal and Rattrap, I think BM was great. Primal's changes were obvious, and Rattrap went from being the #2 to a wimp. Primal's excuse was that he found *cough*religion*cough* er.. I mean "the oracle's wisdom." Rattrap had no reason for his drastic change of character.

Cheetor's evolution through the 5 seasons was the best. From punk kid to leader of the Maximals.
