Had some OK luck at the flea markets this weekend - Despite the heat and some late morning rain that cut Sunday short:

    Energon Hot Shot, no accys

    2 Ultimate Bumblebees, missing missiles
    Spychanger Magnus
    Cyb Scattorshot, no accys
    GravityBot Jazz
    Junker RID Magnus
    (5) TF Decepticon sticker sets
    A few misc TF parts
    TF Movie DVD

    Robotech Boxed SD Myria Valk
    Robotech Carded SD Skull Valk
    Robotech Model Kit
    Rhino Battle Beast

Wow. I have never seen more than one or two TF's at a yard sale or flea market in this region. The best I found recently was a G1 Huffer for $.25 and a fast food Beast Wars TM Megatron for $.05.
I envy anyone that finds more than Happy Meal stuff.

So I have a quick question, because we have a number of very large flea markets nearby that I've never bothered to check out. What would you say are the chances I could go in and reasonably expect to find loose, generally unplayed with, complete toys? If there's a decent possibility, then I'd consider it worth my time to check it out. If it's going to be box after box after box of 25 cent junkers, it's not for me.

I've found there's a small but still reasonable chance of finding decent stuff at pennies on the dollar pricing compared to eBay prices. However, the chances of finding them in the condition you're describing is astronomically low. Most stuff I've found have had flaws and/or were missing accessories - not box after box of 25 cent junkers, some were pretty damn good - but not unplayed with and complete.

Every market is different and at a good market every week is different (unless it's one of those markets that 100% professional dealers, in which case every week is pretty much the same...)

Chances of loose, complete, mint toys cheap is pretty slim... Especially if you are talking vintage. These days most people know that Transformers are worth good money. But I do find more recent toys that way on occasion, and digging through toy boxes can sometimes uncover gems like a Headmaster nebulon or other obscure toy that the untrained eye might ignore. Bigger markets have more opportunity, but also more competition. There's a lot of old ladies blindly buying any TF they find just to throw it up on Ebay in hopes of making a quick buck. It's not like it used to be...

But, ams, I've seen the pics you post of your collection. You've got loads of premium, sealed, AFA graded toys. I can't really imagine you'd get excited about what you'd likely find at a flea market.

And, really, it's more about the thrill of the hunt than the toys themselves.

Thanks for the responses - that's good insight!
Thank you, but I've actually only got a few AFA and sealed items - I'm an opener! :)

But I'm always looking to 'upgrade' the quality of the loose items I have... but it sounds like the flea market might not yield too much in that respect. Still, I've heard enough stories about gems being found that make it interesting.

Totally agree. Sure, you may hit 20 yard sales or flea markets in a weekend and find nothing, but it's still fun. Besides, you never know what else you may find that's cool. This past weekend I found an animated Avatar-state Anng figure for $.25 and some stuffed animals and Beanies for my daughter. Saw a lot of Power Ranger stuff, too.
If all you look for is TF's, you're bound to be disappointed.

Ah - That's where we differ. I am NOT an opener. And that's what makes seemingly normal finds at a flea market a little more exciting to me.

For example, this weekend, for the first time, I got to play with Ultimate BB, Leader Brawl and a Gravitybot! Not bad for one weekend...

    Actually, yes.

    I found:

$3 Blue G2 Grimlock. Floppy left arm and heavily worn chrome. Someone apparently tried to pry his collar open and damaged it. No accessories.

$3 Green G2 Slag. Near mint, no accessories.

$5 Armada Blurr. Slightly worn. Only missing Incinerator, which I already had.

Armada Cyclonus's mini-con Crumplezone and Universe Galvatron's missile along with several Lego pieces for $3.

My best find was a G1 Mirage for $2. Near mint, no accessories. I've already made plans to complete him and buy stickers.

And cheap too! First time I've found anything at the flea market in years! Persistence and luck I guess.

    Wow, great find!

I pretty much struck out this weekend, only finding a couple of TF paperbacks... One rummage sale had a whole boxload of movie toys for $5, but the owner had painted every one of them. What a waste.

It's been a LONG time since I've found a great flea market or yard sale find.

Back in 2000, I used to find a bit. My G1 Bombshell I bought for $1, and he's pretty nice. I later bought his gun at Botcon 2001.

Nowadays, I rarely see much of anything cool in the TF realm.

No, I didn't get them at rock bottom, but I did pay a fair price for them. It averaged out to about $8 a figure which I was very happy with.

And there is no way I am ever opening Electro or Slingshot. EVAR.
