I'm going to return an item that I bought from ebay that wasn't as described. Is the seller obliged to pay me for the shipping costs of returning the item? Couldn't find any info regarding the matter on ebay's help centre.

That's probably something you have to work out with the seller. When you get your refund via paypal, it won't just automatically send you extra for shipping.

Yeah, of course not. And that wasn't exactly my question, was it? I wondered if the seller's obliged (by ebay or paypal rules whatever) to cover all shipping costs.

I thought he answered your question just fine. But to clarify:
    Short answer-
    No.
    Long answer-
It is something you have to work out with the seller. There are no eBay or Paypal rules that make them refund your costs.
(which is exactly what he said)
Having said that, don't bet on getting that money back from the seller. Ever. I've had to return several eBay items over the years, and they've never paid for me to send the item back.

Alternatively, you can call ebay, explain the situation, and having them send you a pre-paid shipping label, ship the item to ebay and subsequently to the seller. It is a long process and it has worked for me before.

As far as I remember no, that's an ebay policy. But my experience is 2 years old.

That version of help centre is absolutely useless.

Open a dispute with PayPal and/or ebay first, or you will get boned.

No. I've been burned on items that were either totally broken or obviously not as described. I compare shipping costs to gas/travel costs. If I buy something locally and have to take it back I don't ask them for gas money. It is just the cost of transporting the item. Of course, it is significantly more money to have someone else transport it for you, but the analogy still works.

Hi, I got a similar problem.
I bought an item and after recieving it it felt kind of fake. I took it to a local store and they weren't sure either.
I sent the item back, on my cost, now the seller won't refund the whole price, just the item price not the shipping.
I'm ok with paying the return shipping, but how is it with the first shipping? Who is responsible for this?
