I do it...got full health benefits and my company matches me 5 percent on my 401k...sure i put up with alot of bs..but are retail jobs REALLY that bad?

Forums make me think so...Look...i would love to be a scientist, among other high society jobs...but I am an artist...and hello! you cannot make art and make money without selling out or becoming professoinal.

That quote from fight club put it perfect..I just cannot remember it...

Heh. Selling out. I have never understood the big thing with this. I was in a band. We wanted to make money, but yet we loved music. Were we selling out. Nah. Do the time, make the money, and then, when you have money, make that freaky art that no one cares for except for you (you, in general, not you, specifically, eyeball).

The only thing better than a quote that is fitting, meaningful, and thoughtful is a quote that you cannot recall any part of. It clearly has stricken a deep chord with you.

I work in retail also. Yeah it's a job, a means to an end. But given that there are harder jobs where you have to put up with more existential bullshit than anyone in retail does, I try not to complain too much, but sometimes it just comes out.

I wouldn't really say that it sucks, but I think I could do better with my knowledge and my time.

So by your definition Tom Waits, an artist in the total sense of the word and apparently a hero of yours, is a sell out?

Or do you just enjoy spitting out non-conformist cliches?

You have the best retail job in the world, apparently. Never quit.

Sweet, I get health, dental, vision, life insurance with a supplemental option, optional group legal, company matches up to %5 of my 401k contribution, and my job is so ridiculously easy, I actually enjoy going to it. Thanks for the advice.

EDIT: Did I mentione my boss is a knockout hottie? None too smart, but very easy on the eyes.

You know, I was just in Phoenix last weekend, and if there was anyway possible, I would have loved to have met eyeballkid at his retail job. I just think it would have been one of those moments I'd never forget.

But I did get to go to the Heart Attack Grill, where I successfully (and stupidly) ate a Quadruple Bypass burger. Make sure to click on the Nurses tab.

It's a real shame that that's your outlook on bettering yourself academically. There have been, in the history of the world, more than a few artists that decided to get high paying day jobs by taking up a second degree.

I wish I worked at Target

Instead I work at Walmart, am fighting tooth and nail to get ANY benefits, and they ain't told me nothing about 401K, despite me being full time and there a year. Plus I'm on third shift.

And my boss is a fat middle aged man fed up with the corporation.

I'm amazed that that is standard at Target.

The only American retail outlet here is Wal-Mart, so I just assumed that was par for the course down there.

"I haven't been f*cked like that since grade school"?

I won't work retail ever again. It's not the job, the management or even the customers. It's the sheer idiocy of the co-workers. From Walmart in college to managing my own small shop, co-workers were the bane of my existence.

I know how you feel... I'm a struggling, aspiring novelist and I'm not interested in anything else. I'd like to get a real job, but that's not going to happen. Besides, now's not the good time for me to be getting a job... I live in Michigan, and Michigan's economy is so f***ing bad.

no,no and no. I see art and music different. Music will always have new stuff going on. Art is at a stand still.
