Hey folks, I'm working on a custom involving HftD Sidearm Sideswipe. He has red windows and I was wondering if there's a way to keep the windows translucent, but make them blue.

It depends on whether the plastic is painted or dyed. I'm thinking that particular figure has dyed red plastic, but I don't own it so I'm not 100% certain.

If the plastic is painted, you can simply remove the paint and paint it in the color you want with translucent paint. If it's dyed, you can only paint or dye in a mix of the color. For example, if the plastic is red, you can make purple or orange, but not yellow or blue (since yellow and blue are the other primaries and can't be mixed).

I'm pretty sure the windows are dyed rather than painted.

    Then unfortunately you're screwed.

The only other option is to remove the windscreen parts, and send them off to someone who can cast them for you in a translucent material, though i'm not sure if it would be worth the trouble.

Thanks for the tips everyone, looks like I'll have to take a different route with this project.

Unless the car has interior details, I'd just simplify it and black them out.

How about a parts-swap with the original ROTF Sideswipe? He's already got blue windows...?

I was thinking this could work as well, depending on if they're the same or similar enough parts.

That's just it - the red plastic is the established problem. Adding a blue Sharpie or translucent blue paint will result in a translucent purple piece (see my above post).

Yeah the sharpie trick won't work. I can't swap out the red windows for the original sideswipe mold's blue windows either, they're different parts. The translucent red plastic on Sidearm makes up the whole roof of the car, whereas Blue Sideswipe has a separate windshield. The back windows of both molds are part of the trunk, so that definitely won't work either.
