Anyone US Citizen who travels within the Western Hemisphere will now be required to have a passport, effective Jan. 23rd. In the past, a birth certificate and valid US ID would have been sufficient for many countries.

Now they will start having fake passports in mass just like fake id's.

Passports are much more difficult to fake.

For most, it's a hassle of an application to go through. Obviously worth taking the time and getting all the proper documentation in line, and paying the $97 bucks, but still a pain for people who were used to being able to travel through Canada, Mexico, etc. after being able to use just a birth certificate and an ID.

I'm not certain what the minimum age is. I'll need to file for one soon; there's a good chance I'll be sent to Canada on business trips in the next few months, and my birth certificate won't cut it like it did last time I went.

I had to get one when I went on my honeymoon to St. Lucia. I for one think it's crazy that it costs like 100 bucks to get it.

On the up side, at least you don't have to get an orange tip added.

    Pfft! :p

Good on you I say! ;)

Hell, I have had to upgrade my passport twice already since 2001 just to be able to get into the US because you guys keep changing your immigration laws. :p  And upgrading those things is NOT cheap let me tell you....

Still, I think this isn't a bad thing at all. I know a lot of places won't take anything *but* a passport as legal identifications like hotels, banks, police and such. And they are NOT at all that easy to fake my friends. My latest one has an "electronic" page in it made of very thick plastic which I doubt any regular comp programmer could just up and alter, not to mention the fine details, ultraviolet threaded-in symbols and such that differ between places of issue.

When I travel abroad (which I do way too often) My Passport is the ONLY thing that must under no circumstances be lost, stolen or misplaced, for without that I am virtually a NOBODY. :(

I believe minors under 16 don't require it although I'm not positive how these new rules effect this.

It's times like these that I'm glad I've had my passport for the last 13 years or so. Saves me some hassle.

I can't believe that there's anyone over the age of 18 that DOESN'T have a passport. Couldn't live without mine.
