The cartoon was also from the 80s and realism wasn't nearly as important as they were pushing with the films.

But did the cartoon have robots peeing on humans, humping dogs, tiny robots humping a human woman's leg, robot testicles, robots farting parachutes, grown up men calling themselves "Deep Wang", people carrying around laminated laws justifying their relationships with underage girls, or generally people yelling at each other hysterically all the time?

The cartoon had weird stuff you'd expect from a cartoon aimed at children.

The movies had batshit crazy stuff you wouldn't expect from a live action movie aimed at an older audience.

Such as transformer getting involved with a little girl and riding on a merry go round, etc

They also gave each character a distinct personality and let them all shine.

No, not really. You could sum up most of their personalities with one or two words.

I don't think the cartoon had MORE weird stuff than the movies. There was some stuff in the cartoon that made no sense, but it was a cheap cartoon to sell toys to kids and as evidenced by this site, the G1 cartoon clearly pleased some people. The movies had all sorts of crazy stuff that makes no sense and even some really creepy stuff (Bay's obsession with younger and younger girls).

Considering that I rewatched the first season of the cartoon literally weeks ago, I'm gonna disagree with you.

Really, what's Windcharger's personality? Trailbreaker? Soundwave?

I'll let you pass on the "distinct personality" although that's really just "hey kids look what I do! Don't forget to buy my toy!"

However I completely disagree with the "let them all shine" because a lot of characters either "came out of nowhere because of toys or kinds just showed up once and stated in the background

Yeah, that's pretty much what I said. Though what makes you describe Windcharger as a "free spirit". And operative is not a personality, it's an occupation.

How is that stranger than a small robot humping on the human girls leg?

I think that should be the difference between 'live action' and 'cartoon'. We expect the films to be better and more realistic (but they aren't).
Which of the two was clever enough to realise if a planet was brought into the atmosphere it would at least mess up the weather?

Well, there were 'hints' of weather-disruption in "Dark of the Moon." There was paper whipping around in the air, which I guess was Bay's way of saying, "weather problems!!"

But yeah, in "TLK," we see Cybertron do some major damage and all...and pretty much there's no caring at all.

Then again, in AoE, Chicago managed to 'rebuild in a few years' following the Decepticon takeover...though I guess they just left Soldier Field as a war monument, and the Bears moved to the suburbs.

agreed, im willing to bend a little bit but some of the stuff in the movies was just ridiculous & unnecessary (looking at you mrs. witwicky) thats from a big bay fan

personally, i love how serious (relatively speaking) films 2-4 were..i prefer my transformers dark, gritty, & realistic. 5 felt like too much of a shift..it's like all a sudden they realized this was a supposed 'kid toy film' which bugs me since the actual story of the transformers is a great one
