My knowledge on cinema/film about whats been and gone is very sparse and i'm after some sci-fi films to watch but don't know what is out there. I've seen all the cliche suggested films like Blade Runner, Star wars and the like but was wondering what else should be seen for a sci-fi fan?

    Thanks.

Dark City is pretty good, for one.

I have the Directors Cut. I love the atmosphere it creates along with its great cast and its one of my girlfriends favourite films so i've seen it quite a lot.

Ah, my apologies - I had no idea you'd already seen it!

Have you tried the Cube movies, Donnie Darko or Time After Time?

No worries, I should have specified. I'm glad it got suggested though as more people do need to see it :)

Thanks for those suggestions I totally forgot about Cube and never heard of Time after Time.

Is that low key? Nobody off the internet seems to know about it. :/

The Cube movies are gripping. I like their premise and the ingenuity of the traps involved. Time After Time is a little dated, but highly entertaining. I won't spoil any details for you; feel free to tell me how it went once you've viewed it. :)

I just had a gander at the synopsis of Time after Time and it seems like something that I would enjoy. Jack the Ripper meets Time Machine - how can it not be good :D

What I have seen with Cube I found to be real interesting, even though it had a small budget and relied on like one set with just different lights it made for a unique and dramatic atmosphere especially at the time since things like Saw wern't around to take the idea and beat it to death.

Haha, indeed! People like me, who are both true crime and sci-fi buffs, get the best of both worlds out of it. :D

I think part of the appeal of Cube lies in how creatively the movie was shot, given its low budget. Such limitations can sometimes bring out the best in filmmakers (Doctor Who is another good example).

Flicking through my DVD collection at the moment, and I've come up with some other sci-fi films I consider hidden gems of the genre. Namely, 12 Monkeys, The Boys from Brazil, and Fantastic Planet. I don't know why, but Metropolis (the 1927 film) is one that I can't help but like, too.

Only thing that I can think of is Equilbrium. I'm not sure how much that's because it fits your criteria compared to how much it's me being totally obsessed with the film.

I never did see the film, mostly due to it being raped by critics but as we all know that really shouldn't stop anyone from seeing a film. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not even sure most of the critics saw the film when it was so much easier to look at the poster and conclude it was a Matrix clone. "He's carrying two pistols! And wearing a black coat! It MUST be a Matrix clone!"

Give Time Bandits and Brazil a go. The former is just plain fun, and the latter is pretty trippy.

Forbidden Planet. Based off Shakespere's The Tempest, it is one of my favorite movies. And you get to Leslie Neilsen in one of his first roles, and he is not doing slapstick comedy.
