I'd recommend WFC Soundwave as a GREAT affordable starting point for a Soundwave collector. :)

I actually quite like the RotF deluxe. The official Alt modes are a bit questionable, but i theres loads of fan mode potential!

The best Soundwave figure to date is G1 Soundblaster.

Animated Soundwave. Really Sharp with the Laserbeak Guitar and Laser rimmed Speakers all over the place. the blue version should be Super Cheap to find online.

The Generations WFC Soundwave is one of my favorites. The best official modern Soundwave anyway. You can fan mode a boom box out of him. But the Cybertron Truck mode is winds up being a really a enjoyable Transformation since it holds together solidly, without panelforming.

Also Machine wars/Universe Soundwave you could probably pick up cheap.
Those can be charming in a blocky retro way.

The original G1 Soundwave really is a great mold considering that it is 30 years old or so...I realize that a MISB specimine would cost you a ton of cash, but you should be able to find a decent quality loose figure in an affordable price range...otherwise, Foster speaks the truth...the WFC Soundwave is a very cool version.

I am a huge HUGE fan of WFC Soundwave. He is extremely posable and looks great.

Also, Fakebusker has made AWESOME Shapeways minions for him.

Shapeways does not offer color printing for these unfortunately. But there are a number of colors plastics you can choose from.

RiD Soundwave is a neat figure (if you can find him), and I personally love the Reaper alt mode. An integrated Laserbeak is a nice little bonus.

DOTM HA Soundwave is also a highly recommended figure. If you can get past the legs (they're not that bad once you have him in hand) and the lack of silver paint (again, not that bad once in hand since the gray plastic is actually decent), he's an awesome addition to the HA line. Wonderful alt mode, very fun and menacing bot mode. Laserbeak is pretty cool too.

Prime RID Soundwave is great, and so is TFA.

Honestly I think WFC kinda sucks.

How much does the Dreamwave reissue cost these days? I would have thought that would be a good bet, especially as its the Soundblaster mold and comes with Ravage and Laserbeak.

Go get PRiD (Oh, great. Now I'm using "PRiD") Soundwave. You'll regret it if you don't.

I second the Cybertron Soundwave. He has Laserbeak that pops out his chest and both of his iconic guns. I am also very biased towards space jet modes.

WfC and PRiD Soundwaves are also great. WfC has both of his iconic guns and his car mode is pretty good, and PRiD is just really neat, fits in well with Beast Machines Vehicons. PRiD's Reaper form is also futuristic enough to look in place on Cybertron or realistic enough to look in place on Earth.
