I recently got into an argument with someone about the true reason Hot Rod became the new leader of the Autobots instead of Ultra Magnus. He said it was the fact that Hot Rod was the first one to touch the matrix after It dropped from Prime's hands. I say that is incorrect, that the real reason Hot Rod became leader is that the Matrix chose him, it sensed the qualities of a leader within him, and that it had nothing to do with "who touched it first". I believe I am right. What do you guys say?

Rodimus was the chosen one, yes. The reason the Matrix lit up like that was because he was destined to carry it.

    The Matrix chose him.

Him catching the Matrix was just foreshadowing.

I thought the real reason was the cost for the Optimus Prime toy mold was too high and Hasbro realised they could make a larger mark up by producing a new, cheaper mold comprised entirely of plastic.
But then I have been accused of being a cynic, so we'll go with the whole chosen one plot.

So, if the Matrix had fallen from Optimus' hand and landed on Daniel we could've had Dannimus Prime simply because he'd have touched it first? Would the Matrix really be so casual in who it chose to be the next Bearer? Touch me and I'm yours? The song line 'You got the touch' had nothing to do with Hot Rod touching it first. What if it had hit the floor and rolled out the door and a Decepticon had picked it up?
It sounds to me that your friend is just irritated that Hot Rod became leader instead of his more preferred TF Ultra Magnus. It's simply Leader Envy.

Yeah, I'm in the "Matrix chose him" camp. I don't think the combined wisdom of the Autobot leaders is that fickle to think whoever touches it first gets the head honcho position automatically.

I have a different take on this,

I think Magnus was supposed to lead. The conversation between Prime and Magnus was
I’m not worthy, I’m just a solider. Prime response was neither was I, but an autobot will one day rise from the ranks and light our darkest hour.

Now with that said, he passed the Matrix to Magnus as it was passed to him.

So, the Matrix picked the Autobot that would be able to open it, Hot Rod.
Dose that mean Prime wouldn’t have be able to open it as well if he lived?

Did the Matrix Pick Optimus and HotRod?

If Prime was never to die, could he open the Matrix? Was his prophecy before passing on still intact if he was never to died? Was HotRot always picked as the one who could open the Matrix and light out darkest hour. I think so.

Just cause he killed Unicron doesn’t mean he was suppose to lead the Autobots.

The rebel alliance didn’t give Luke Mon Mothras Job because he blew up the Death Star.

Rodimus has always been know as the Protector. I think it’s a different function then leader.

In my continuity, the Matrix knew Optimus was dying, and it entered a 'search' mode for the next Prime Autobot.
It was in this search mode when it was dropped and Hot Rod touched it first and was judged worthy. He was then imprinted as the next leader which is why Ultra Magnus couldn't open it.

I like my idea better than the whole "predestination" angle.
EDIT: So whoever touched it first was judged, but not necessarily chosen as Leader.
No Wheelimus Prime or Beachcomberimus Prime. :)

    Items that support my argument.
    1. The Matrix flashes when Hot Rod touches it. He was judged and accepted as leader.
    2. Optimus chose Ultra Magnus as the next leader. If the Matrix itself just had a predestined leader than why would Optimus pass the Matrix to anyone other than that predestined entity? Certainly the "Wisdom of the Ancients" would let the current leader know who was next in line.

Items that contrary to my argument.

    1. The Matrix flashes when Hot Rod touches it. This could just as easily be a case of the Matrix recognizing the new leader.
    2. (Comic Continuity Only)
When we see Primus in his celestial form he pretty much looks exactly like Hot Rod.

Because Hasbro wanted to replace the core cast with a new set of characters, at least this is the logistical reason.

As for story-wise, your reason is correct.

I don't even know how much I'm willing to believe that considering how many times Hasbro and Takara have used that mold. Sure the all-plastic figures are cheaper to make than those with die-cast, but that only changed halfway through the '86 run. There are still plenty of Hot Rods and Rodimus Primes with die-cast feet and rubber tires.

Hot Rod was chosen just like everyone else has said. I think that Optimus would have been able to open it if he hadn't died because I believe that it was the Matrix along with Alpha-Trion's help that changed him from Orion Pax.
