No because I'm not done yet. I forgot how waiting for paint to dry can make you anxious when you've got an idea. Okay so step by step then: First off, he better make a good space ship because he makes lousy binoculars. Seriously he's smaller than my hand. But he does have a pretty cool USS Defiant vibe to him. (oops there go the ST kitbashers, off to try it) 2nd he's a REALLY badass little fellow, after Protoform SS I really didn't expect the "entry toys" to be such a good deal. He's really stable, fairly beefy and reasonably articulated. Not to mention a fun transformation. (I hope I don't screw this up.) I really like this shade of metal flake green, Testors is what I use, I paint by hand for practice keeping my hands steady. Yes I know he's still yellow in places, I didn'y want to paint over the Autobot signal, so he's gonna have a yellow stripe. Plus some more detailing later.
You may like your painting by hand method but some spray and tape will do wonders. It's a nice concept but looks a little...uh sloppy (sorry). Seriously, WalMart has a spray unit for little testors jars so you can use whatever color you want. Butit is definately a nice concept
Yup, I thought this would be a problem. Green doesn't show up on the black, Time for a base coat. Seems to be working onward and upward and the feet
Spray may work better but I'm not comfortable with it. Once it's done I welcome anyone to take and improve upon my ideas. So would I, waiting for the paint to dry is a pain. Trying to post before inbound storm fries computer The head, the head, the head Is RED! Aint it pretty?
Someone at tfmaster beat you to the punch at doing a Cosmos out of the Real Gear Binoculars. You might want to go with the spray units wreckgar mentioned, or be a lot less heavy handed with the brush. Brush work is really best for small area details. He actually looks like you might be able to lay down bare metal foil pretty easy, so that's also an option. Good luck! edit: I posted before your other replies were up; I don't see why your uncomfortable with spray...try it, you'll like it! Make sure to pick up some masking tape if you ever give it a go
Again, I'm working with what I know right now. Belive me I HOPE I inspire a lot of superior versions. Because I can admit I'm no where good as half of these people here. I tried tape once and wasn't satisfied with the results. This is more of a practice piece anyway, if I screw up I can get another Longview pretty easy for now. Heck I wouldn't doubt a Cosmos repaint from Hasbro down the road. Foil eh? Yeah that would look good. HEY CAN SOMEBODY DO THAT? I WANNA SEE HOW IT LOOKS!! (again, not something I'm familar with) Oops arms popped off, good I needed to get back there anyway. Fancy my foot work? Getting the back side of the nacelles/legs
So the storm has passed and I finished another paint app. So here's another update. Underside, BTW those yellow spots? They actually glued the screw ports shut! Is this a new thing? I'm thinking of painting them into retracted landing gear. Silver/grey? Or should I leave them yellow as a homage to G1's underside 'orbs'? Before: After: Still have more detail work to do on his 'ship' mode. (I can't even transform him untill he dries, grrrr) But I don't know what will show up in bot mode, so this is damn close to finished here.
The end effect is a nice repaint. I think he looks good, dude. I do have to agree with the other folks who have said that disassembly and spraying helps give you a nicer paint effect, but nobody's forcing you - hell, I ain't. Do what's comfortable, and most of all, enjoy yourself. If you like how Cosmos turned out, then that's the best payoff of customizing.
The red looks very good, that green jsut didn't seem to go on very smoothly for you though. Love the idea, think I've seen one other one on the boards already, and I'm fairly sure I'll be making one myself.
This is a great idea for a repaint, I might just "borrow" it Brush painting can still result in some very nice work. The trick I've found is to put the paint on in little "pools" and then push it around with the brush so that it flows over the parts that you are painting rather than having to be brushed on. It sounds a little weird, but it works great. That's the method I used for all of my custom seekers.
Actually, I showed it here and at TFmaster.com http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/showthread.php?t=136083 Also, WalMart got to sell the Krylon Fusion line. They have now many choices of colors available in spray.
Yeah, I saw Ptitvite's version a few days ago. Just to let both of you know, I'm stealing this idea as well. Finally have a reason to buy those lousy "binoculars" zmog
they aren't lousy, their just little kid sized. Thats the thing with all the Real Gear guys, they are sized to be Roleplay type toys for little kids. Probably why they went with the classics cartoon like look for them as opposed to the movie look as well. Less Frightening to little kids. They are probably my favorite part of the movie line though. Love all the little guys.
These are at least affordable, good for parts and are close enough to the deluxe classics size. I did'nt buy the others Real Gear figures but when I saw LongView, I instantly saw Cosmos in that little guy!
Cosmos with the Binoculars bot...not a bad idea, I actually like i...*eyes shift slowly towards Ptitvite's signature*
