This takes place before Hal is arrested in Final Crisis so I don't know why it was delayed.

    Spoliler

The red Lanterns aren't the only ones to make an appearance.

I admit I wasn't expecting much from this, since it's just a one-shot but WOW was this good! In my opinion, Geoff Johns can do no wrong!!!

    How's that a spoiler?

What I want to know, is Fatality one of the Red Lanterns? She seems like an obvious fit.

That was awesome. I definately was not expecting too much from this but, wow...that was just a fun issue. Plus that glimpse of the Blue Lantern...I can't wait to read this saga. The story was also paced pretty well.

I still wonder if it is possible to be both, especially if the Corps are from the same ends of the spectrum (Red and Yellow definitely go together - Rage and fear, as in, one capable of great rage is also capable of bringing great fear).

Actually it appears that fear and will power go well together as the scarred guardian seems to have a little of both. Also I love how it appears Blue Lanterns can supercharge other Lanterns powers. Hal went from 57 to 200% I guess next issue we will find what Ganthet is up to.

Damn, this was far, far better than I had expected...and I had very high expectations. With the exception of a few speed-bumps (Hal's chats with Ferris and Sinestro), Johns knocked this out of the park. There's a ton of information packed into this issue, touching on five of the seven Corps, updating the scarred Guardian's plotline and revealing some powers of two of the new Corps. I can't wait for the next issue of Green Lantern to see this battle continue.

    Full spoiler summary...

    - Atrocitus gets his ring, costume and battery; all stuff from the preview.
    - Hal called to Oa by John. The Guardians are going to execute Sinestro on Korugar and want Hal, John and other Lanterns to supervise the transfer.
    - Hal chats with Carol Ferris (flying a jet at the time) about whether Hal is 'OK' with Sinestro's pending execution. Brief summary of some of the Hal/Sinestro history. Generally boring for me, but might be good for new readers.
    - The scarred Guardian, with Black Lantern symbols in her eyes, communicates with Ash; he's found part of the Antimonitor's armor. She sends him into Sector 666.
    - The scarred Guardian refuses to allow the other Guardians to help her heal. The Guardians indicate Sinestro's transfer to Korugar must be kept secret, to which the scarred Guardian agrees...even as Sinestro Corps symbols appear in her eyes.
    - Hal and Sinestro chat.
    - Splash page of the Red Lantern Corps, featuring Laira, several characters from the GL #25 splash and what appears to be a small blue house cat. Subsequent pages identify two Red Lanterns: Bleez (tortured by Sinestro Corps members on Ranx) and Vice (mate eaten by Arkillo). All of them, including Laira, repeat mantras of hate and rage.
    - Controllers approach Okaara, in the Vega system...home of the Orange Light.
    - Sinestro being transferred by Hal, Kilowog, John, Salaak, at least three Alpha Lanterns and a few other Lanterns. Small group of Sinestro Corps members ambushes them. Scarred Guardian, with GL symbol in one eye and SC symbol in the other, appears briefly when John wonders how the Sinestros found them.
    - Blue-housecat-looking Red Lantern attacks a Sinestro Corps member, spitting out red liquid that melts through the Sinestro's head. Sinestro's transport vessel is on fire...on fire in space.
    - Red Lanterns attack both the GLs and Sinestros. Atrocitus can see Sinestro's blood (which, interestingly, forms the shape of a Sinestro Corps symbol around his heart).
    - Laira attacks Hal with her ring. The liquid/energy from her ring bursts into flame...and burns through Hal's aura, incapacitating and corrupting the power of Hal's ring, so he can't determine his remaining power.
    - Fire goes out on Hal's hand and the power of his ring begins to rise (88%...108%...164%...) as a Blue Lantern symbol appears on his ring.
    - Hal's ring at 200% as Saint Walker, the first (and currently only) Blue Lantern appears. He claims that they need to rescue Sinestro, as he'll be needed alive for everyone to survive the Blackest Night.

Blackest night was a prophecy from an old Alan Morre story. Recently Geoff Johns has started to take this old tale and bring it to life. Blackest Night is the supposed end of the GL corps. The Blue Lanters are a Splinter group founded by two former Gardians Ganthet an Syyd. This event is spinng off the Sinestro Corps war and new Lanterns are being found and made. The black Lantern (rumored to raise the the dead) Th Lantern of death is powered by the corpse of the Anti Monitor. Other corps such as the upcoming orange corps and the Star Saphire corps are also being formed. There is going to be a war between these corps.

I liked this issue. As indifferent as I am to the Cowgirl character, and Hal Jordan's civilian life in general, really, it was good to see Hal doing something out of costume in the present again (we haven't seen him take off the ring since before the Sinestro Corps War). Even if it was only for a couple of pages, it was a good change of pace.

The Red Lanterns are awesome. I love that they basically vomit fiery blood as their main method of attack. And one of their members is a house cat, how awesome is that? Kind of a pity that Purple Psylocke is a feral, foaming at the mouth animal now, though. I kind of liked the character and hoped she'd at least stay capable of verbal communication.

The Blue Lantern showing up was a surprise. Pretty cool one, though. That just leaves what, the Orange and Indigo Corps that haven't shown up yet? (and the Orange Lanterns are clearly coming up soon)

"The Blackest Night" was a prophecy given to Hal's predecessor, Abin Sur, in the Alan Moore short story 'Tygers' (collected in DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore TPB, which also includes other Alan Moore classics). The prophecy given then was vague and discussed the enemies of the GL Corps uniting to destroy the GLs. At the time, the story was intended more to explain why Abin Sur was using a space ship when he crashed on Earth, rather than flying through space with his ring. This story didn't have much bearing on anything for a long time.

Geoff Johns, at the end of the Sinestro Corps War storyline in GL #25, has recently expanded the original prophecy to describe a "War of Light" between seven different Lantern Corps. Each Lantern Corps uses a different colour (ROYGBIV) and each colour represents a different emotional state:

    - "Violet Lanterns"/Star Sapphires - Emotional state represented is love. Controlled by the Zamarons (offshoot of the Guardians of the Universe) and powered by a crystal skeleton of unknown origin. The Star Sapphires have been kicking around the DCU for awhile, but their powers in this current incarnation are largely unknown. A new member of this Corps just recently appeared in GLC.
    - Indigo Lanterns - Emotional state represented is compassion, they use staffs instead of rings and tattoos instead of traditional costumes. Virtually nothing is known about them right now.
    - Blue Lanterns - Emotional state represented is hope. Created by Ganthet and Sayd, two Guardians who were tossed out of the Guardians of the Universe during Sinestro Corps War. Saint Walker is the first Blue Lantern, seem to be able to recharge some (all?) power rings, otherwise little is known about them.
    - Green Lanterns - Represent willpower or the 'center'/'balance' of all emotional states. Further away from this colour, in either direction, more influence the power has over the user.
    - "Yellow Lanterns"/Sinestro Corps - Emotional state represented is fear. Featured in the recent Sinestro Corps War storyline. Currently in disarray with their former Guardian (Antimonitor) and upper level warriors (Sinestro, Cyborg Superman, Superboy Prime and Parallax) scattered, although Sinestro seems to be in command still and Mongul is attempting a coup. Similar abilities to GLs
    - Orange Lanterns - Emotional state represented is greed. The Controllers (another Guardian offshoot) are trying to harness this power, but someone else appears to already have it. Little is known about them right now.
    - Red Lanterns - Emotional state represented is rage. Controlled by Atrocitus and powered by blood, particularly that of Atrocitus' terror cell, the Five Inversions (one of whom was the narrator in Alan Moore's original prophecy story). "Rage of the Red Lanterns" was their big debut. Generate flammable liquid energy that can burn away GL/SC force fields.

After the "War of Light", according to Johns' expanded prophecy, the "Blackest Night" will occur, consisting of a time when a new force rises up to destroy all seven Lantern Corps and eradicate all emotion and life in the Universe. These will be the "Black Lanterns" and a teaser at the end of Sinestro Corps War showed Black Lantern rings resurrecting the dead across the universe. GL villain Black Hand is somehow involved, but otherwise little is known about the Black Lanterns.

man, this story line just kicks so much ass...i had very high expectations for this issue, and it totally delivered...it was just a great read, and all the blood is just a fantastic touch for these guys...i really like the look of the characters, and can't wait for the next 3 issues...GL 36 was originally slated for today, but since this issue was delayed until today i think it'll be another two weeks...but hopefully its next week...just love this book...

after this arc is an arc called Agent Orange (wonder what thats about) not sure how long though, but then should be the war of light (unless all this buildup is part of the war of light) and then blackest night should be after that...but that's pushing it since BN is supposed to be the 2009 summer event...if agent orange is 4 issues, that should come out in february, march, april, and may...and thats not much time for BN to come out as a summer thing...even though most summer events start at summer and end later...ah...i just cant freaking wait...

This pretty much blew my mind. It was fantastic!

I can't wait to see how the GLs are able to battle the Red Lanterns and their space fire. I also cannot wait to see how the Blue Lantern thing pans out.

The vomiting blood/fire was a little disgusting, but cool.

Here's the thing I don't get though. Atrocitus is describing his blood and the other member's blood being replaced by the red light of the ring. It would seem that they would die without the ring.

I want ultraviolet lanterns that have costumes that look like grateful dead posters.

Green Lantern Corps #29 shows Miri Riam being recruited by a violet ring.

I also picked up this RotRL book and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I love this idea they're doing with there being several Lantern Corps starting up. Seeing how different the Red Lanterns abilities are from the Yellow and Green was interesting. Should be really interesting to see how this War of Light plays out and the following Blackest Night story.

    Killer house cat FTW.

I found the space escort of Sinestro to Kurugar to be kind of dumb. I would think the guardians could of found someone to just instantly teleport Sinestro there for the execution.
