Thanks to seeing the awesome Quintesson Judge sculpt that Odeean's been working on, I'm finally getting back to a project that I planned out over a year ago. I drew up my measurements and sketches on a wooden egg. I've started this project a few times, but the sculpting challenges have always scared me off.
I'm roughing out the five heads with Mighty Putty and working up the details with Quikwood. I like to carve as much as sculpt so Quikwood's great. It takes about 20 minutes to set up and then I can carve in the sharp details that a robotic lifeform needs. The Skull face really kicked my butt. I needed several layers to get this far. When I'm sculpting I find it really easy to get involved in the details and forget the structure, so I'm planning on doing the faces first then the helmets.
The Quikwood's tan and the Mighty Putty is white.
This is very much a Work In Progress so all crits and comments are welcome.

Thanks so much guys! The cast or not to cast question is ever present in my mind as I work. Even if I don't sell it, I'd love to have a trio of these guys on my shelf. I'm first and foremost seeing if I can pull it off at all.

Good luck to you. Looking good so far. How did you get the wooden egg into its shape?

Thanks for the great response everyone! I'm glad you like it so far. I have a good start on a third face, but in spite of my measuring, I'm worried about them bunching up. Hopefully it will work out.
Odeean- the egg was the easy part. I bought it as-is from a craft store.

Knock knock! Devil Man calling! Along with Fat Man, Fat Asian Man, Skinny Pointy Hat Man and Skeleton Skull Guy!
So far the spacings ok. Their sizes are a smidge inconsistent, but that's fine by me. They're brothers not quintuplets, no matter how tempting that title might be.
The faces are getting close to where I'll be happy with them, so the big challenge that remains is to get those big cheek guards that three of the five have on without crowding out their neighbors'.
Sculpting this thing really makes one appreciate how crazy this design is.

Thanks! That's the Devil Guy though. He still needs his horns, so I understand the confusion. ;)

I've decided not to cast this one, by the way. It's just more work than I feel like putting in. Since it's in one piece, to do it really properly, I figure that I'd need to make a six-part silicone mold with a hard two-part mother mold. No, this one's just for me. Part of the fun of customizing is having a trully unique piece.

I'm finally back with an update here. I finished the sculpts and I'm on the the painting stage. I'm trying a version of what's called, in the fin arts field, under-painting. I based the whole thing out in silver and did all the shading with black. Now I'm applying most of the colors over top as clears. I'm trying to give the colors as deep and metallic as a finish as possible. There's still lots of cleaning up here, still very much a work in progress, but I wanted to show you what I've got done.
    Thanks for looking.
