I wasn't really sure what term to query so if this has been discussed before a link would be great. Have any of the TF series detailed the events leading up to and the rise of Megatron and the Decepticons and the ensuing war? Oh and I'm not talking about flashbacks. I mean a series (comics, cartoon or otherwise) that goes through the war as it unfolds? The only series I can think of at the moment is the War Within comics. Are there any others?

    Point made.
Wow, you beat me by seconds!
Yeah, it's got a pretty poor story, Megatron's development doesn't make sense and the art is really muddy...

War Within aside, there's a lot of untapped potential in this.

In order of timeline, Megatron: Origins comic series. Then War Within comic series. War Within is very good. Megatron: Origins has some great moments, but overall it's a poor mini series. Check 'em out, I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

How much was left unfinished with the War Within series? I know it was ended before it could be finished. I just wonder how many questions are left unanswered. I've never read the series and was afraid to read it knowing it was never finished.

I beleive there where only 3 out of 6 comics released in the last WW, and I think they were about to tell some original stuff the end of 3, (or was it 4) there was some leading back to the Quintassions.

WW1 was all about the origin of Optimus Prime, how he assumed the Matrix and grew from a literal nobody plucked out of a data centre into the leader that he is famous for being.

WW2 (The Dark Ages) is all about a dark period when Optimus and Megatron vanished and others took up the torch, but less effectively. It shows how things fall apart without those two. It also to a greater degree introduces The Fallen, one of the original 13 Transformers thus expanding on the original mythology of the series.

WW3 (Age of Wrath) is the one that is unfinished. It starts with Megatron returning with an army of generic Seekers, and introduces a Quintesson tie into Megatron's return never explained because this series and the ongoing (which alluded to it as well) never paid off with the plot points. It was probably going to reconcile the Quintesson origin with the Primus origin as far as the creation of the Transformers was concerned.

Basically, each series is pretty self-contained. Only real hanging plot thread from the first two volumes is how Optimus and Megatron come back, and where they went. There's enough in what was published in the third one to puzzle out an answer.

Thanks for the info Sol Fury. It doesn't sound to bad, maybe I'll look into it. Do you know if it was ever scanned by anyone online. If not, I guess I'll look around at some local comic shops for the issues.

There are trade paperbacks available at any comic book store, Borders, or other chain book stores of War Within and Dark Ages. Just in case any wanted to actually buy the comics and not have to sit at a computer to read them.

War Within is part of the DW G1 universe.
Megatron: Origins is part of IDW's universe.

I personally like Megatron: Origins, but that's mainly because we get to see a lot of Sentinel Prime. The lineage of Primes/Autobot leaders has always interested me.
