My dad is a totally lost case when it comes to computers, and animaton so he asked me "Why are CGI effect so damn expencive? It's just a buch of guys sittion in fron of a computer the whole day! It's nit like they have to pay a ton of poeple money to be bystanders, or to give the mall costumes, or to make big props, why does it cost soo much?"

And personaly....I have no idea how to answer that since I'm not a really informed when it comes to that, I only know it cost a lot but that's it. Can anyone help me answer his question?

A "bunch" of guys sitting in front of computers for many, many, hours make (and cost) a lot more money than minimum wage extras and cheap props. A "bunch" can also number in the hundreds, all of them requiring very expensive equipment and software.

CGI requires custom software development and lots of specialist computer hardware and rendertime, but most importantly lots of staff working lots of hours. If you've got 100 people sitting at computers full time for 1 year that adds up pretty quickly.
