Okay so in Beast Wars a protoform is seen as kinda a newborn and yet we have characters like Tigatron, Airazor, Blackarachnia, and Silverbolt refer to Cheetor as "kid". So is there like a life before protoform thing or just an error?

not newborns. the protoforms in BW were just regular Maximals without altmodes in stasis lock. they were still part of Primals crew

    Most of them were newborns.
Although due to a few retcons. Tigatron and Airrazor were not.

In Beast Wars, Protoform = blank/sparkless Transformers.

They can be "newborns" or "semi-reboots"

No... Basically 'transformers' bodies are like 'vehicles' for the spark. Autobots and Decpeticons were 'old' and the population was reformatted to more energy efficient bodies and bodies that could withstand other planets environments.

So TFs who go on space exploration missions have their memories and spark removed from their clunky old TF body and put in a protoform. So when they get to their new planet to colonize or explore, they can take on a form that not only can survive on the new planet but is able to consume and metabolize food into energon.

None of the TFs were babies. They were all cybertronians who simply had new MAXIMAL bodies opposed to AUTOBOT bodies.

    Think of it this way...

    This is an Autobot:

    This is a Maximal Protoform:

Internal to the Beast Wars animated series itself, yes, protoforms are "newborns", as it were. The show treats the Transformers who come out of stasis pods as if they have not had lives beforehand, with the exception of Rampage, who was evidently regressed to a protoform state in order to imprison him. It was this little bit of info that opened up the possibility for retcons by later media - for instance, IDW made Grimlock one of the protoforms, having undergone this regression, and BotCon fiction revealed that Airrazor and Tigatron had existed on Cybertron, but had their sparks transplanted into protoforms when their original bodies were destroyed (and their memories were lost in the process). Beast Wars II also had the veteran warriors, the Autorollers, first appear as protoforms who scanned vehicle modes, indicating they had undergone this "regression" or had their spark transferred, or something like that.

For the most part, however, protoforms are treated in nearly all continuities as the first stage of the Transformer life-cycle. So, yes, that DOES make it rather odd to have freshly-created Transformers referring to pre-existing ones like Cheetor as "kid." But then, that's all part of that weird not-really-very-defined life-cycle that Transformers have, where a Transformer can be "born" with a fully fledged "adult" mind (see innumerable other examples: Constructicons and Jetfire in the comics, Technobots in the cartoon, Aerialbots and Stunticons in both, any of the TFs brought to life with an AllSpark shard in Animated), while another can have an immature "kid" personality despite having been around for longer than them (Hot Rod, Wheelie, Side Burn, Animated Bumblebee, and so on).
