Tell your friend NY is a horrible place to test the waters on such a business. Trust me.

Unless by "starting a business" he means "lose his shirt". And house. And will to live. Etc etc.

Dude, it's a shame you weren't eligible for this year's Jerk Contest. It would've made the field much more ... legitimate.

Good luck to him , there will be alot of up & downs but tell him to stick with it, it's a niche market to get into. It maybe too costly at first , so If he has any friends who want to voluntarily help him out it's be cool.
He may need some 3rd party help in the beginning to bulk up the place and keep inventories coming in to keep buisness consistent

Profits will be slim with comic books only, but with a loyal cliente and marketing the store correctly, you can turn a profit. Add toys and games and he'll probably make more.

Try Slively at livewireworld.com, she's runs a comic shop and will throw you some pointers

Here's another link "How to start a comic store"
COMICON.com: SDCC '06: HOW TO START A COMIC BOOK STORE

I dont know much about it really, I just googled lulz

It's a really poor retail market right now to try launching an independent business, and especially for a comic shop.

You also have many other things to take into consideration, such as location, lease, operating expenses, payroll, taxes, business licenses and permits, building codes, etc. And if there's already an established comic shop within a certain distance, you've got competition. Plus, it's going to take you a while to build up regular clients to do their Previews and special orders.

And something a lot of comic shops I used to frequent have changed to is becoming an open house for gamers. One shop stopped being a comics store altogether and just catered to card/board gamers exclusively.

I have a very difficult time seeing that there's really much money to be made in comics. A number of store owners I've spoken with say that most of the time they barely break even. It's a tough, niche market.

Not a huge amount, d00d. Taken up airsoft to let me get some aggression out (good an excuse as any to run round in a wood shooting people;)  ), and I haven't slept for the least 2 weeks due to medication changes.
    How's the business going?

Honestly I have wanted to do the same myself. Start a small comic shop, selling action figures, video games and all sorts of anime stuff. But do to the bad ecomony of course, I decided against it.
