I noticed that the Starscream proto owned by Megatroptimus has a "NOT FOR SALE" stamp on each of the wings beside the Decepticon symbol - for those who have the other protos - are there any markings such as this to distinguish that what you have is a proto and not a mass-released product?

    Thanks!

I'd go straight to Megatroptimus with that question, he has been collecting as much pre-release movie stuff as possible so has the most resources with which to answer your question.

The stamp your referring to, usually means that the toy(s) (movie or otherwise) are factory samples or prototypes. This also means that they are stolen in some way, shape, or form, as its someone in one in the Chinese factories or somewere along in the production process who probably swiped it to sell on eBay. Hence the "Not for Sale" stamp is to identify these samples as such.

Not the best illustration but that's the gist of it from what I understand.

All the ones that I got had Sample written on them in pen. I am sure you could get it off if necessary. No stampings tho.

From what I understood, the 'Not For Sale' are etched or stamped onto the figure somehow. Just written in pen on the figure is new to me.

In addition, some figures are actually defaced in some way too. One of the Starscream 'samples', for instance, has one side of his face mashed in and splashed with red paint.

I was asking to make sure that there was something on the test shots that would indicate that it is an authentic test shot. I'm actually preferring that test shots have some concrete identifiers instead of it simply being written on.

It shuld be made clear that not all testshots are marked. I have an Alt Sideswipe testshot with details missing that are on the final release (the little silver thngs under the doors aren't there at all, the fit on various parts is clearly not finalised, and the colours in the lights are coloured paper), and an Alt Meister with a moulded Mazda logo (as opposed to the final release's tampo'd on one), and neither of them are marked "not for sale" at all.

I was mostly referring to the movie toys, Draven. BTW, is your Ratchet toy marked with any identifiers?

My FAB SS has sample written on two of his wings in some kind of black marker.
My Classics SS has not for sale stamped into the blue area on the top of the jet, as well as missing some paint apps.
I haven't recieved my Voyager movie SS yet, so not sure about him yet.

Nope, nothing. And I know you were mainly referring to movie stuff, but it's a general thing, so does apply here too.
My speed Dial testshot doesn't have markings either, BTW.

Voyager Starscream has the NOT FOR SALE mention on it, plus the messed up face.

FAB Ironhide was partially painted and had 2 letters written on him with a marker.

Alternators Ravage has a number engraved on the windchield.

FAB Prime, FAB SS and Voyager Ratchet don't have any marking.

Protoform Prime, DLX Barricade and DLX Brawl were all MOSC.

That makes me wish I knew the story on how my SS got his markings.

I have two test shots- one's the LOC Cybertron Megatron- it's mostly black, with a few white parts, so it's easily identifiable from the final release. I also have a test shot of Nightscream, the recently released minicon. Biggest differences are a lighter shade of red used on the dragon parts, and a Decepticon logo rather than an Autobot one. Evil Twin FTW!

On the subject of markings, and who appears to get them.
    So far I have:
-Alternators Sideswipe (differences to final version, not marked)
-Alternators Jazz (differences to final version, not marked)
-Energon Mirage (not marked, identical to final release I believe, except I had it 3 months before he came out)
-Classics Prime (not marked, identical to final release I believe, except I had it 2 months before he came out)
    -Energon Demolishor (unpainted, not marked)
-Movie Voyager Ratchet (unmarked, presumably identical to release version)
-Real Gear Speed Diall 800 (not marked, presumably identical to release version)
-Cybertron Dirtboss (stamped "not for sale")
-Beast Machines Geckobot (unpainted, different plastic, not marked)
-The yellow Alt Tracks I used to have was unpainted, and stamped "Not For Sale)
-I don't know if my Beast Wars Razorbeast is marked or not, since it's a packaging mock up, sealed on the card, and it staying that way (I've never seen another one)
I would hypothesise that only a certain phase in the production gets marked; my guess would be that they're final versions, but presumably used as examples to show to stores, execs and such.
