Question: Is the PS3 region free for games and Bluray?

I'm thinking of getting one while I'm in the states as they're about $250 cheaper over there. Also, is the 40 Gb model utter crap?

I believe for games, it's region free.

    Not so for DVD's/Blu Ray

AS for the 40gb model, it's probably the only one you'd find nowadays, unless you get lucky and some 80gb's are in stock in the area's you'll be in.

There's nothing wrong with the 40gb version aside from the lack of PS2 compatibility. I understand why people want this but that's the main limitation.

From what I understand about the blu-ray and region locking is that yes, it has it, but only if the disc is encoded with region locking. From what I've heard a lot of titles don't have this but I'm not sure if there's a list out there.

Just looked it up. Here's a couple of lists that display if a title is region free or not.

Cool, it's sounding pretty good. Even if they start region coding a higher percentage of Blu-rays I can just order them from Amazon US and it'll probably still work out cheaper than buying them from here.

Where's a good place (cheap) to get a PS3 in the states? I looked on the Walmart website and they had 'em for $400.

thats the retail price for the 40GB system.

If you're going to be in the US in june, I suggest getting the 80GB MGS4 model that has PS2 compatability (US games only), a dual shock 4, and MGS4. $500. the bundle hits June 12th.

$400 is the price here. If you don't mind a used one you can get them cheaper, EB/Gamestop sells used ones refurbished for $379 for a 20 gig(no built in wifi is the main draw back), $349 for a 40 gig, and $449 for an 80 gig. You can enter the zip code of the area you'll be in to see if any local stores have them in stock.

We have some local stores in my area called Disc Replay, its a used DVD/Games/Music/Systems store that sells most PS3s in the $300 range. If you could find a similar store.

One thing you might want to think about is getting it back to your side of the world.

You might get hit by customs, and there is the weight of it to consider with your baggage.

QFT. Although, it may be hard to find this bundle. I have a feeling it will sell well.

I'm not sure if it's an issue or not, but isn't Australia PAL? (At least I think I recall you being from Australia.) Isn't there some sort of conflict with running NTSC games/movies on PAL TV's?

It's going to be VERY limited according to Sony. Though that doesn't mean much.

I thought it was the gunmetal one that was going to be extremely limited with the bundle listed above as becoming the defacto 80gb bungle.

the 80 GB MGS4 one will replace the motorstorm 80 GB bundle. even if it does sell out, it's probably going to get restocked. the gunmetal one is similar to the JP version - limited edition, sell out quickly.

Not gonna be around in June (I get out of there by the 24th). PAL/NTSC isn't an issue as basically every TV here (from the last 15 years) supports both.

Customs is a worry. I still have to consider if Sony will still cover me in case of any sudden death to the console (Do PS3's have an equivalent RROD?)

PS3s dont have an equivalent to the RROD, but there are some VERY RARE problems, none of which are major enough for me to know the details of.

my 60GB launch unit still works as perfectly as it did on day one.
