if this is true, it will surely piss off those who want the backward compatibility but now cant (or now).

i already got one (a 80gb in fact) so i'm good to go.

Backward compatibility isn't important to me at all, it's a nice extra to have but not something I need. I do care about other things like the hard drive and various cable ports.

They better add BC back into later models.

why would sony do this? take away the better model and leave an inferior one for us to buy? just makes no sense.

Well I think Sony is hoping that those on the fence about the PS3 and want BC will be scrambling to get one before they go away.

BC just wasn't important to me. I bought a 40GB and used the $100 I saved to buy a 250GB hard drive for it.

If I still had a ton of ps2 games I wanted to play, I'd still have my ps2. Since I got my launch 60gb model, I've played ONE ps2 game for more than 10 minutes(god of war 2). I never cared about BC on the ps2, don't care about it on my 360, didn't want or need it on the snes, n64, gamecube, genesis, saturn, dreamcast, etc.

There's tons of new games to play, and with a full time job and a social life, I don't need to spend time playing old games for the heck of it. For every person I see griping about a lack of BC, I can think of 2 people I know that don't care about it at all. If you want to play ps2 games so bad, yet don't have a ps2, it's not like they cost a lot. We're talkin what, 100 bucks? Oh hey, that's how much more the model with BC runs.

What would be nice is if all the console makers quit making odd misshapen lumps of plastic and stuck the wii, 360, ps3, etc in a black box that properly fits in an av cabinet so I can stack it with other items.

Breaking news: Sony has released a backwards compatibility device for the PS3 for $100. They're calling it the PS2.

Odds are that there will be a new Ps3, with a 120-160 GB HD so it compares more like a 360 Elite...and will probably come packaged with the Rumble Sixaxis, and will either not come with a game or come with Heavenly Sword. Probably still backwards compatible via patches...

One is clearly selling by the shit ton, the other clearly is not.

BAI BAI Backwards compatibility, the market has spoken and told you to take a hike.

i guess i must not have been really paying attention, but i thought the bc was all software emulation... why then do some not have it? its not like extra hardware to put in a unit from what i understand.

Early US PS3's are hardware Emu, Early Euro and later US are Software.

Why are they taking out the software? I dunno. I would imagine there are -some- chips still present to help out, but... not really up to speed on this shit anymore as I don't really care. But if my launch unit breaks and I lose BC then I will be royally pissed :lolol

Perhaps Sony will do what MS did, and make BC a downloadable thing for different games? (not a dig, just a thought)

Technically if it IS a software thing, then there is -no- reason at all to not either allow it to be a downloadable app or simply KEEP ON INCLUDING IT which leads me to beleive that in their constant streamlining of the architecture, there have been some chip losses that prevent this in any way.

Aw, you've got to be FUCKING kidding me! :banghead:

I had plans on getting an 80GB PS3 so that I could get some old PS2 games and play it on there. Guess not.
