I stream on my ps3 with the disc now, and am not entirely sure why this is a big deal...

Did you even read the article? Up til now, the highest available Netflix streaming was 720P on any netflix-compatible hardware. PS3 is now getting the highest quality Netflix service possible, on par with Bluray movies.

They are also getting a custom 5.1 Dolby surround service specifically made for this, instead of the usual stereo.

no, I read the article. it just seemed like the biggest thing that people were mentioning was that it was going to be discless, not the other benefits, and I didn't see it as such an inconvenience that it needed a disc.

It may be 1080p, but I very highly doubt that it will be on par with blu-ray. The resolution may be the same, but I am quite sure the bit rate won't be close.

If all they did was make it so you didn't need the disk anymore it would been enough to make me happy.

You're probably right, but it should still be a nice step up from previous offerings.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be 1080i though, not 1080p.

Not according to Sony, who actually made the effort to correct their posting from 1080i to 1080p

Netflix on PS3: Disc-free Next Week – PlayStation Blog

They did say SOME shows though.

I like the interface (it just installed this morning). It's like the web site's interface, which lets you see more of your instant cue at the same time. The movies also load hella fast,

I have enjoyed Netflix on my PS3. Will be happy to have it as a discless interface, not that I minded using the disc. However, video quality will never be on par with disc based media. The compression, codecs and bit rate used (coupled with relatively slow and crippled broadband speeds in North America) will make sure of that. The best they can hope for is broadcast quality HD right now, and I can live with that.

If I want Blu-Ray quality, then I'll own it on Blu-Ray.

Yeah I agree completely. Netflix does not replace Bluray, no matter how many times I hear "It plays in 1080p." I can make my old VHS movies play in 1080p and it means absolutely nothing.

I have to say it's nice to see the disc-less service. As for quality, it won't take much to one up Xbox. I've watched some pretty low quality movies on Xbox's Netflix.

Didn't realize update was out till just a little while ago when I turned on my PS3. I like that it doesn't take as long to load and stream now. Plus I can actually receive/reply to messages during streaming.

used it last night, as we're going through all of the series 24. not much of a picture difference (I've been really happy with it anyway) but the menus are very different. lots more information on them, and they give you a video preview of the show, instead of just an image.
