Wow, how can they upscale those to 1080p? I guess I'm not sure how that works.

Not sure of the logistics. The 360 does the same thing with all their games. Upscale from 720P to 1080P on naitive 360 games and from 480P to 1080P for original XB games. That's assuming the TV being used supports 1080P. My DVD player upscales to 1080i, while my fathers can upscale to 1080P. I will say that many original XB games really benefit from the upscaling. Namely Halo2 and Battlefront2.

If I had a PS3, I'd play through Transformers (Armada) again just to have it not look like ass on my TV.

As far as I uderstand, it just renders the scene at a higher pixel resolution, but it won't upgrade the polygon count or texture mapping.

but I would assume they would look pretty jaggy on 1080p. Which to me kind of defeats the purpose of HD.

Not to mention that upscaling DVDs to 1080p makes blu-ray seem a bit pointless, doesn't it?

PS. pick your armor and skill, dammit!

Well in 1080i, most of my XB games look nice and smooth, and they're being upscaled from 480p. It really depends on the game. My TV is 720p/1080i, so I can't test the 1080p stuff.

wait wait. Since "upscaling" is kinda well... BS, wouldn't a better term be rerendering in 720/1080? At least with the Xbox stuff? Ive seen some XB games on the 360 and it looked like they were just rendered in a much higher resolution, not just "upscaled" as with what happens with DVDs. So are the PS2/PS1 games being rerendered in HD, or merely having a filter being put over it and calling it upscaled? People with PS3s need to inform us when this update hits. :p

I would like to see a comparison of an upscaled dvd, compared to the same movie in blu-ray format. If the differences are negligible, then I would have to imagine that blu-ray will fail.

Whoah. Hold on. Upscaling DVD's will not make them comparable to Blu-ray. And for ps2 games, they are not rendered at a higher resolution. They are rendered at the same resolution and then *upscaled* to 1080p (if your tv can handle it). I think this just means that it takes the games output converts it to 1080p and then applies some antialiasing.

Upconverting a DVD won't look nearly as good as the same movie available in Blu-Ray or HDDVD. However, it is an inexpensive way to make your existing DVD's look outstanding on an HDTV. When I get a PS3, I plan to buy some movies on Blu-Ray, but I have no need to replace my existing collection.

Is it possible to take any video signal and upscale it, or do you have to alter it at the source?

I ask because I'd love an inexpensive device that could upscale my PS2 (and original Xbox) games, without the need for a PS3.

EDIT: NM, I answered my own question. There's a software package that runs on the PS2 that can do it called xploder.

    Ninja Gaiden, too.
That game looks so much better coming through the 360 than it does on the original Xbox.

I'd be happy to when they release this update. Although I don't think screenshots would suffice. I will need to capture video probably to really show the quality of a 1080p native device.

It would be tough. The nature of HDMI prevents you from doing direct screen caps. However, someone did an excellent comparisson between a standard DVD and a 720P Broadcast for Lord of the Rings.

Mouse over the images to see the HD image. Click on the images to see much larger versions.

LOTR is one of the best DVD transfers out there as well. While it's not upconverted, it's a decent indicator of the differences you would see between the 2 types of videos.

yeah, I remember that. I don't think it takes into account upconverting though.

No it does not. However, it's near impossible to find upconverted images because they require HDMI, which prevents you from screen capturing directly from the source.

Yeah, I remember looking at that a little while back. Looks pretty nice. It's like looking at something with my glasses off and on.
