The Church of England is considering legal action against entertainment firm Sony for featuring Manchester Cathedral in a violent PlayStation video game.
The Church says Sony did not obtain permission to use the interior in the war game Resistance: Fall of Man.

The game, which has sold more than one million copies, shows a virtual shoot-out in the cathedral's nave in which hundreds of enemies are killed.

Sony said it believed it had sought all necessary permission for the game.

    'Not reality'

The company said in a statement: "Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is aware of the concerns expressed by the Bishop of Manchester and the cathedral authorities... and we naturally take the concerns very seriously.

"Resistance: Fall of Man is a fantasy science fiction game and is not based on reality.

"We believe we have sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game."

The firm said it would be contacting the cathedral authorities on Monday "to understand their concerns in more detail".

But the Church said Sony did not ask for permission to use the cathedral and has demanded an apology and the removal of the game from shop shelves - otherwise it will consider legal action.

The Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, described the decision to feature the city's cathedral as "highly irresponsible" - especially in the light of Manchester's history of gun crime.

"It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem," he said.

"For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have guns battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible

"Here in Manchester we do all we can to support communities through our parish clergy. We know the reality of gun crime and the devastating effects it can have on lives. It is not a trivial matter."

The Dean of Manchester Cathedral, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender, added the game was "undermining" the work of the church.

"We are shocked to see a place of learning, prayer and heritage being presented to the youth market as a location where guns can be fired.

"This is an important issue. For many young people these games offer a different sort of reality and seeing guns in Manchester Cathedral is not the sort of connection we want to make.

"Every year we invite hundreds of teenagers to come and see the cathedral and it is a shame to have Sony undermining our work."

Patsy McKie, from Mothers Against Violence, whose son Dorrie was killed in Manchester, said it was time to stand up to the makers of violent games.

"I believe it's something that needs to be taken seriously first by the Church but also by parents.

"There's a war going on - not just in Iraq, but right here on our doorstep."

Sony described the game as being set "in an alternate and mythical version of Europe in the 1950s, in which the enemy are strange-looking alien invaders seeking to destroy humanity".

Earlier, David Wilson, a Sony spokesman, told The Times newspaper: "It is game-created footage, it is not video or photography.

"It is entertainment, like Doctor Who or any other science fiction. It is not based on reality at all. Throughout the whole process we have sought permission where necessary."

For the record i say huge news cos this was the 2nd main story on the News at 10 in the Uk, so its being treated very seriousely

Not to bring another issue into this, but...

Didn't England, you know, ban guns? How does that work?

This is messed up in all sorts of ways, man...

Sony's in a deep enough sinkhole... then all of a sudden, EVERYONE wants to sue them... for the most asinine reasons...

Don't you guys think this is all a little TOO odd?

Add to the fact that the church is calling for a recall of the only "killer" app for the PS3.... something stinks about this whole thing...

Amen!! They'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands!!!

This sounds totally dumb, yet in keeping with the "entire world has gone bonkers" mentality now creeping (nay, 'charging') in everywhere. I'm sure the human race has reached it's peak and is now 'devolving' (or is it 'de-evolving'?)

Ok, first is he accurate in saying that Resistance and by extension the PS3 is aimed at the youth market? At over £400 for the most basic package I would be inclined to say that the console and therefore games are aimed at a slightly older market.
Secondly there's a serious flaw in his logic, people who already own guns and have a willingness to use them don't need convincing from a video game to use them in church. People who don't own guns aren't going to think "hey let's get a gun and shoot up the church" after playing the game either.
Thirdly doesn't he even realise they're not even shooting people? The player is saving the world from big bastard monsters who've probably been shitting in the confessional for years. He should be happy.

    This is dumb.

    You're fighting ALIENS.

    In a WWII-esque setting.

    IN A VIRTUAL WORLD.

Seriously, it's a fucking slow news week.

i think they are right. you cannot go for a forghtnight5 without hearing about how some poor sod has been shot or stabbed, and this only deepens the wounds for the mothers of innocent people caught in gang wars who look to the church for condolance. they did not have to set it in britain. they could of had it set in country x or future space colony y. and as far as cost is concerned, chavs have mothers who just buy what thier brat wants to shut them up, and do not caqre what the kids get up to, i.e. gun crime and drugs. and i would just liuke to point out, i am an athiest, and am in no way connected with the church. however, i may be biased because of how offended i am in regards to a dirty bloodbath set in the [kinda] beautiful city in which i live.

There's a shootout in a fish-factory and pub in Grimsby, plus a railway station in London. Have any of those complained?
It's also ironic that despite the destruction, Manchester looks rather beautiful (it's my favourite level in the game, actually!) and the Cathedral section takes all of a few minutes of it.

It's inconceivable, is what it is.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm in the process of writting a letter of complaint to Microsoft for accurately recreating Edinburgh in Project Gotham Racing 2 and making me speed round the city I was born in. They didn't get my permission to use the streets I walk on.

yes, i will make a comment before playing the game since i am not some companys tool who will buy a £400 console which in all honesty, is overpriced and wasted on me. but they did not have to have it in 50's england. they could of had a space colony, or a planet which we are being forced off.

"some companys tool" :lol  That's a ridiculous statement, I'm not even a fan of the PS-3, but buying one doesn't make you "some companys tool" as you so eloquently put it.

    Get over yourself man.

I am offended by the film Spiderman-3. It features a battle in NEW YORK CITY which has a horrible crime problem and gun troubles. They should have set it in outer space and have Spiderman fight invading space colonies. They didn't have to set it in New York. I'm going to sue now.
