Yeah, didn't Energon Scorponok initially have a "base mode" of sorts, but was scrapped? I don't know whether or not it made prototype stage, but Universe Galvatron's concept art showed a cool third mode.

Does anyone have a picture/description of the ROTF Leader Optimus prototype? I'd be interested in knowing what they removed, and if I could get a view of it seeing if there's a way to reincorporate it. After all, if Hasbro figured out how to do it, there's no reason why we couldn't, right?

Obviously, we already have great articulated hands available, but the splitting tires, retractable hands, and fold-away boxes would be neat.

First Movie Leader Class Megatron looked better in prototype than it is now.

ROTF Voyager Stratosphere initially surfaced with a mini space shuttle that turned into a gun.

I doubt that would happen. Toy tech has changed since then, so making a mold for BW Unicron may be infeasible without the proper CADD drawings. The old machines from that time probably are hard to find and in disrepair.

If I remember correctly, Takara said making new steel molds for G1 Prime for the 25th anniversary took a lot more effort, time and money than they expected.

It's not like you can just dip the figure in steel and make an exact copy.

You know, they could still mass produce this and release it under the Prime line as Megatron (or another character entirely). The aesthetics are somewhat similar. They'd just need to develop a joint plotline to promote the toy. That looks too good to not be released.

The question is, were the molds produced or not?

The resin prototypes exist independently of the actual tooling.

If Hasbro actually went so far as to have the molds casted, then you'll probably see them try to release the figure in some manner eventually, to recoup their costs, as mold production is incredibly expensive.

If no tooling exists, then it'll probably never see the light of day.

Well, barring the prototype leaking into KO hands.
